In einer virtuellen Rekonstruktion werden der Sammlungsort der Universitatsbibliothek im Juleum zu Helmstedt, seine Ausstattung, die Objektsammlung und historische Schriftstucke im Bibliotheksarchiv erforscht. Der Name des einzigartigen Renaissancegebaudes erinnert an Herzog Julius, Grunder der Universitat und der Hofbibliothek in Wolfenbuttel. Neu entdeckte Architekturzeichnungen von Georg Christoph Sturm zeigen, dass die 1759 eingerichtete Saalbibliothek altere Bibliotheksraume ersetzte. Seine Raumkonzepte wurden zusammen mit handschriftlichen Inventaren, Bibliotheksordnungen, Katalogen und Korrespondenzen archiviert. Die Analyse der Dokumente zur Wissensorganisation wird in dieser Studie mit Ergebnissen zur Materialitat und Benutzungsgeschichte historischer Hand- und Druckschriften verknupft – so erhalten soziale Praktiken scharfere Konturen. Als die Universitat 1810 geschlossen wurde, standen in der Saalbibliothek etwa 24.000 Bucher aus Nachlassen oder sakularisierten Klostern. Hinzu kamen Belegexemplare oder Ankaufe bei Auktionen. Beschriebene oder erhaltene Gemalde, Munzen, Kuriositaten und Herbarien sind zur interdisziplinaren Erforschung der Gelehrtenkultur und institutionellen Sammlungspraxis von besonderem Interesse.
