Riparo a Costantinopoli e rientro in Italia al seguito di un esercito inviato dall’Oriente per deporre l’usurpatore insediatosi sul trono alla morte di Onorio. Divenuto imperatore il figlio Valentiniano in minore eta, Galla Placidia si trovo ad esercitare il potere supremo, mantenendo poi anche in seguito una notevole influenza sulla vita politica.
