Materialsprovidethebackboneofallhardware.
Successandefficiencyofanengineeringmachineorsystemisasmuchdependent
onthedesignasontheperformanceofthematerialthatisusedtofabricatethekey
components. Advancement in engineering, hence, significantly depends on devel-
opmentofengineeringmaterialsthatcanadequatelymeetthechallengesposedby
design,serviceconditionsandunavoidabledamageordegradation.Thus,theambi-
tionofthenationtobeatmanirbhar (self-reliant)willsubstantiallydependonour
abilitytodesign,developandintegrateadvancedmaterialsandalliedmanufacturing
systemsthatwillnotonlymatchtheinternationalspecifications,butwillalsoprovide
anadvantageforengineeringthefutureofthenation.
Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE), mandated to promote excel-
lence in engineering profession and policies, constitutes engineering forum on
specific topics or themes both of contemporary relevance and futuristic ambition.
Itiswiththisintention,theINAEForumonIndianLandscapeofAdvancedStruc-
turalMaterials wascreatedtoreviewthecurrentstatusofavailability,qualityand
adequacyofstructural(loadbearing)materialsinIndiaandoutlinethegapandchal-
lenges to be overcome to meet the current and futuristic demands in construction,
strategic,aerospace,automobile,energyandallotherimportantsectors.Obviously
challengeslienotjustinrawmaterial,equipmentandcompetence,butalsoincreation
ofdemandandsustenanceofinterestandbusiness.Therefore,thetaskisneithereasy
nortrivial,butisabsolutelyessentialifIndiatrulymeanstobeatmanirbhar.
I am glad that the INAE Forum on Indian Landscape of Advanced Structural
Materials is now ready to publish a special volume with very well researched
articlesaddressingspecificthematicareasauthoredbythemosteminentengineers
and technologists of the country. I sincerely hope that this effort and the articles
will provide a ready reference to the planners, researchers, entrepreneurs and
industry-leadersbothfromcivilianandstrategicsectorsinthecountryfordeveloping
advancedstructuralmaterialsencompassingmetalsandalloys,ceramics,polymers,

Conceived in 2016, this book has taken six years to evolve to the present shape.
Alongtheway,threesymposiawereheldonthesubject.Writingthecontentinvolved
painstakingeffortsbytheeminentauthorstopaintthecurrentpicture,comparewith
thebestintheworldandidentifythegapareasforournationtoworkon.Thepapers
wentthrougharigorousrefereeingprocessbysubjectmatterexpertsacrosstheglobe.
Theobjectivewastocreateadocumentthatfocusesonstructuralmaterialsand
recordsthelandscapeofmanufacturingcompetence,researchanddevelopmentcapa-
bilityinIndiaandcompareswithglobalbenchmarks.Theideawastoidentifythe
gapsandsetdirectionfornationallevelactionstotakeIndiatoworldleadershipand
self-reliance.
Structuralmaterialsarecoretobuildingaself-reliantnation.Metalssuchassteel,
aluminiumandtitanium,non-metalssuchaspolymers,polymer-matrixcomposites,
ceramics,glass,cementandconcretemaketheinfrastructureonwhichanationruns,
produces energy, defends its borders and fuels its industrial growth. Materials, of
themselves,affectuslittle;itisthewayweusethemwhichinfluencesourlives,said
Epictetus in AD 50-100, in his Discourses Book 2, Chapter 5. This book covers
mostofthemajorstructuralmaterialsandtheirapplicationsinenergy,construction,
defenceandotherlargesectors.
It is hoped that this book will be relevant to multiple sections of readers. The
studentmayfindthisausefulsourceofinformationaboutstructuralmaterialsand
their use; the professor perhaps will find areas in which research can be initiated;
thepolicy-makermayfindthisbookusefultofocusintoareasthatneedinstitutional
attentionandfunding.
