Abstract
Dielectricelastomeractuators(DEAs)areapromisingsoftactuatortechnologyforrobotics.
Addingroboticfunctionalities—folding,variablestiffness,andadhesion—intotheiractuator
designisanovelmethodtocreatefunctionalizedrobotswithsimplifiedactuatorconfigura-
tions.WefirstproposeafoldableactuatorthathasasimpleantagonisticDEAconfiguration
allowingbidirectionalactuationandpassivefolding.Toprovetheconcept,afoldableelevon
actuatorwithoutlinesizeof70mm×130mmisdevelopedwithaperformancespecification
matchedtoa400mmwingspanmicroairvehicle(MAV)ofmass130g.Thedevelopedactuator
exhibitsactuationanglesupto±26◦andatorqueof2720mN·mmingoodagreementwith
apredictionmodel.Duringaflight,twooftheseintegratedelevonactuatorswellcontrolled
theMAV,asprovenbyastrongcorrelationof0.7betweenthecontrolsignalandtheMAVmo-
tion.Wenextproposeavariablestiffnessactuatorconsistingofapre-stretchedDEAbonded
onalow-melting-pointalloy(LMPA)embeddedsiliconesubstrate. ThephaseoftheLMPA
changesbetweenliquidandsolidenablingvariablestiffnessofthestructure,betweensoftand
rigidstates,whiletheDEAgeneratesabendingactuation.Aproof-of-conceptactuatorwith
dimension40mmlength×10mmwidth×1mmthicknessandamassof1gisfabricatedand

characterized.Actuationisobservedupto47.5 angleandyieldingupto2.4mNofforcein
thesoftstate.Thestiffnessintherigidstateis∼90×largerthananactuatorwithoutLMPA.
We develop a two-finger gripper in which the actuators act as the fingers. The rigid state
allowspickingupanobjectmassof11g(108mN),tobepickedupeventhoughtheactuated
graspingforceisonly2.4mN.WefinallyproposeanelectroadhesionactuatorthathasaDEA
designsimultaneouslymaximizingelectroadhesionandelectrostaticactuation,whileallowing
self-sensingbyemployinganinterdigitatedelectrodegeometry. Theconceptisvalidated
throughdevelopmentofatwo-fingersoftgripper,andexperimentalsamplesarecharacterized
toaddressanoptimaldesign.WeobservethattheproposedDEAdesigngenerates10×larger
electroadhesionforcecomparedtoaconventionalDEAdesign,equatingtoagripperwitha
highholdingforce(3.5Nshearforcefor1cm2)yetalowgraspingforce(1mN).Thesefeatures
makethedevelopedsimplegrippertohandleawiderangeofchallengingobjectssuchas
highly-deformablewaterballoons(35.6g),flatpaper(0.8g),andarawchickenegg(60.9g),
withitslightweight(1.5g)andfastmovement(100mstoclosefingers). Theresultsinthis
thesisaddressthecreationofthefunctionalizedrobotsandexpandingtheuseofDEAsin
robotics.

créerdesrobotsquimèneàdesconfigurationssimplifiéesd’actionneurs.Toutd’abord,nous
proposonsunactionneurpliablequiaunesimpleconfigurationDEAantagonistepermettant
unactionnementbidirectionneletunpliagepassif.Pourprouverleconcept,unactionneur
d’élevonpliableavecunetailleextérieurde70mm×130mmestdéveloppéavecunespécifi-
cationdeperformanceadaptéeàunmicrovéhiculeaérien(MAV)de400mmd’envergureet
d’unemassede130g.L’actionneurdéveloppépermetunangled’actionnementjusqu’à±26◦
etuncoupleallantjusqu’à2720mN·mmenbonaccordavecunmodèledeprédiction.Lors
d’unvol,deuxdecesactionneursintégrésd’élevonscontrôlaientleMAV,commeleprouva
unefortecorrélationde0.7entrelesignaldecommandeetlemouvementduMAV.Nous
proposonsensuiteunactionneuràrigiditévariableconstituéd’unDEApré-étirécollésur
unalliageàfaiblepointdefusion(LMPA)dansunsubstratdesilicone.Unactionneurpour
prouverleconceptestfabriquéetcaractériséavecdesdimensionsde40mmdelongueur×
10mmdelargeur×1mmd’épaisseuretunemassede1g.L’actionnementaétéobservée

proposégénèreuneforced’électro-adhésion10×plusgrandparrapportàuneconception
DEA conventionnelle, ce qui équivaut à une pince robotique avec une force de maintien
élevée(3.5Ndeforcedecisaillementpour1cm2)mêmesilaforcedepréhensionestencore
faible(1mN).Cescaractéristiquespermettentàlasimplepincerobotiquedemanipulerune
largegammed’objetsdifficiles.Lesrésultatsdecettethèseportentsurlacréationderobots
fonctionnalisésetl’expansiondel’utilisationdeDEAsenrobotique.
