Preface
FIMH 2009 was the fifth international conference on Functional Imaging and
Modeling of the Heart. It was held in Nice, France, during 3-5 June 2009. This
biennial scientific event presents researchand development efforts in the field of
cardiovascularmodelingandimageanalysistobetterunderstandthephysiology
and pathologies of the human heart. The final objective is to improve the diag-
nosis and therapy of cardiac diseases, which remain a major health issue in the
western world and in Asia.
Thisinternationalconferenceisfosteringthecollaborationbetweenscientists
invariousfields(signalandimageprocessing,biophysics,biomedicalengineering,
robotics,computerscience,appliedmathematics,etc.)andexpertsincardiology,
radiology,surgery, biology and physiology.
Duringthepast8years,FIMHhasestablisheditselfasaleadinginternational
conferenceonthe methodologicalaspects offunctionalimagingandmodeling of
theheartwithastrongemphasisonclinicalapplicationsandvalidation.Thepre-
vious conferences were held in Helsinki (2001), Lyon (2003), Barcelona (2005)
and Salt Lake City (2007) with an increasing number of peer-reviewed articles
publishedintheLectureNotes in Computer Scienceproceedingsavailableatthe

The2009proceedingscontainoriginalarticlesselectedafteracompetitiveand
rigorous peer-review process. The authors had to submit a full paper (8 pages
in the proceedings format) to be reviewed in a double-blind process by 3 or 4
members of the international Program Committee composed of 55 prominent
scientists in the field. For the first time this yearthe authors ofaccepted papers
had to reply point by point to the remarks and suggestions of the reviewers
while submitting their revised final version, which was reviewed a second time
for final acceptance. To help the authors improve their original contributions,
they were allowed two additional pages to include more explanations, results
and/or references as requested by the reviewers.
The result of this selection is a set of 54 articles involving 200 authors and
co-authorsfrom14countriesof4continents.Thesecontributionswerepresented
inNiceduringasetofsingle-trackoralandpostersessions.Inaddition,Professors
R. Razavi (London, UK), R. Howe (Harvard, USA), A. McCulloch (San Diego,
USA) and T. Peters (London, Canada), presented state-of-the-art advances
duringtheir keynotelectures.
We want to thank the members of the Program Committee, the additional
reviewers, the organizing team and all the participants who jointly contributed
to the scientific success of this memorable event.
