Authors Note
Book i of this story is written practically as it was told
me by Captain Starr. I have even kept the same phrases
as far as possible, so that I should not come between him
and the reader any more than I could help. As regards the
important Avenue Foch chapters, while I have been very
careful not to include any incidents about which Captain
Starr’s memory is not absolutely sure, he does not know
their dates; and while he has tried to allocate them ap­
proximately to the right time of year, he cannot vouch
even for the order in which they happened.
The whole book was read by Captain Starr before
publication.
