INTRODUCTION
TheneedtohaveaFaroese/English Dictionarybecameclearin 1972when
wewereworkingonatranslationofFýroyingasýgaintoEnglish.Incarrying
out this task, we had to use the Orðabók by M.A. Jacobsen and Chr.
Matrascoupled with a Danish-English Dictionary. It wasquickly appre-
ciated that this method notonly increased theamount ofwork and time
expended,butalsotheriskoferror.
Afterconsideringourown problems, we realized that similarproblems
mustalsoapply to any Faroese person,childoradult,whowastrying to
learnEnglish.Accordingly,wecommencedourfirstdraftoftheDictionary
intheautumnof1972.
TheoriginaldraftwasbasedontheOrðabókbyJacobsen and Matras but
lateritbecamenecessarytoincorporateintoourDictionarytheadditional
material contained in J.H.W. Poulsen's Supplement to Jacobsen and
Matras'Orðabókpublishedin 1974.
WeconsideredthatitwasessentialforourDictionarytobeeditedinthe
Faroe Islands by native Faroese speakers and this editing has been duly
carriedoutthere.Wewouldthereforeextendourmostsincerethanksand
appreciation to all those who assisted in editing our Dictionary in those
Islands and, in particular,toOli Breckmann, Seán Sweeney,Jóhan Hendrik

PRONUNCIATION*
Introductory.
TheearliestmodernFaroesetexts-vocabulariesandtranscriptions
of traditional ballads - date from the seventies of the eighteenth
century. Theyare written phoneticallyand sovaryaccordingtothe
dialect of the writer. In 1846 V.U.Hammershaimb published some
textsinaneworthographyhehaddrawnuponetymologicalprinciples.
This orthography bore a close resemblance to the parent language
OldNorse,foroneofHammershaimb'saimswastomakethetreasures
ofFaroeseballadrymoreaccessibletoallScandinavians.Atthesame
time he had created a medium equally acceptable to all Faroese
speakers,regardlessoftheirdialect. But, ontheotherhand, modern
FaroeseisphoneticallyfarremovedfromOldNorse,sothatHammers-
haimb's system gave but a very imperfect representation of the
spoken word. Inthemeantime,however,hisorthographywithminor
modificationshasbecome the acceptedstandardand hence weoften
find considerable differences between spelling and sound in Faroese
to-day.
There is as yet no recognised standard pronunciation of Faroese,
though that oftheTórshavn district is the mostsignificant. Dialect
speaking iseverywherethe general rule. However, thedifferencesin
thepronunciationofthedialectsinnowayhindermutualcomprehen-
sion. The following description represents an average pronunciation
based broadly on the central area (Vágar, Streymoy, Eysturoy).
Many other pronunciations may be heard inside as well as outside
this area, and these are, of course, acceptable. Some idea of the
differencesmaybeobtainedfromthephoneticallytranscribedextracts

Vowels.
[a:] is pronounced as a in Northern German war.
[a] the short form of [a:].
[e:] pronounced as e in German Mehl.
[§:] a rather open [e:].
