Preface
In January 2020, I was going about my business. I had contract work
in my field of public history, was actively gigging with a jazz combo,
and planning to work on a book. Then in February came the news
that a new virus was sweeping the globe. By the first week of March,
I was self-quarantined with my wife and two cats.
As I am an immunocompromised individual due to a kidney
transplant, I experienced a year like no other. I was not alone; the
entire population of the earth experienced a similar, if not much
worse, year.
Therefore, this book is an ode to the first responders and front-
line workers who took on the Herculean task of countering the
effects of a worldwide pandemic. From infectious-disease scientists
and hospital workers to grocery store clerks and delivery drivers,
the world still managed to function, albeit in ways not seen since the

1918 influenza pandemic.
