The UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre was established in 2000 as thc
world biodiversity information and assessment centre of the United Nations
Environment Programme. The roots ofthe organisation go back to 1979, when it was
founded as the lUCN Conservation Monitoring Centre. In 1988 the World
Conservation Monitoring Centre was created jointly by lUCN, WWF-International
and UNEP. The financial support and guidance ofthese organisations in the Centre's

undercontract to FAO.
The data presented in this report have to a large extent been extracted from WCMC"s
Species Databases. These databases have been developed from a wide range of
published and unpublished sources of data. In particular, the accuracy of the
information depends on the expert contribution generously made by biodiversity
experts from around the world. Comprehensive lists ofthe contributors are included in
the published outputs from these databases: 1996 lUCN Red List of Threatened
Animals, the 1997 lUCN Red List of Threatened Plants and the World List of
Threatened Trees.
The project was managed by Harriet Gillett. Staff involved in assessing forest
occurrence and identifying relevant species for each category were Neil Cox (animal
data): Charlotte Lusty (trees and palms). Work on ferns was undertaken by Clive
Jermy, Chair of the Fern SSC group. Rachel Bishop, under guidance from Gerardo
Fragoso, produced the phase 1 Excel table. Edward Coney produced the graphs and
tables, and prepared the web pages. Lise Jackson helped format the final report.

SUMMARY
The objective of the species component of FRA 2000 was to provide an initial
indication of the national importance of forests to the maintenance of biological
diversity. Studies were undertaken in this project to gather information on the number
and names of species within defined taxonomic/habit groups, according to threat
status, endemism and forest occurrence.
Data were only comprehensive for all the taxonomic/habit groups studied, for the
category of threatened single country endemics. The numbers and names of these
species are included in this report. Difficulties in compiling the data for each group
are discussed. Ferns are considered to be the most relevant group to focus on in the
future in terms of indicators of the importance of forests to the maintenance of
biological diversity.
Proposals are made to extend this desk study to include verification of the data by
each country and collation of more detailed distribution data. Analyses of data on
threatened forest occurring single country endemic species in relation to forest loss,
forest area and forest protection will provide an indication offorest areas of particular
importance for species conservation. Conversely, these analyses will indicate those
species in mosturgent need ofconservation measures.
