For the 404 members of the Fire Department, City of New York, who have made the supreme sacrifice
in the line of duty since I was privileged enough to join their ranks in 1979.
For all my friends. So many of you are no longer with us, like Ex-Chief Butch Borfitz Sr., Deputy Chief
Raymond Downey Sr., Chief of Department Peter Ganci and Lt. Dennis Mojica, guys I worked with and
for in the good times. As the boys from Sheffield Avenue would put it, “You done good.”
For my family: my wife Jeanne, who acted as my typist, editor, and general coauthor; my three sons,
John, Patrick, and Conor, who were a constant source of inspiration; and my parents, who shaped my life
so well, Ex-Chief John W. “Butch” Norman Jr., who got me started in this business in the first place,
and my mother, Lillian.
