About Fight Another Day

Fight Another Day is a truly classic Second World War prisoner-of-war 'home-run' escape story by the man who afterwards went on to lead M19 and who who organised the POW escape chains from out of Nazi occupied Europe that were responsible for saving so many lives throughout the war.

James 'Jimmy' Langley was born in 1916 and as a young subaltern in the Coldstream Guards, he lost his arm after it was amputated at Dunkirk in 1940. Jimmy had been commanding one of the rearguard actions that had helped to cover the evacuation beaches, left behind along with the majority of those who were wounded, he was captured but eventually went onto escape via Lille, Paris, Marseilles, Spain and Gibraltar. He describes the fierce fighting that took place outside of Dunkirk with uncompromising honesty, his brief captivity and medical treatment, his eventual escape and extraordinary life in Vichy France - before the Germans moved in to control all of occupied France.

His fellow escapees and the French Civilians who sheltered them make for a rich cast of characters.

On his eventual return to London, Jimmy Langley was ruled unfit for further service by the medical board, but soon afterwards he was recruited into the Secret Service (MI6) from where he went onto run MI9, organising the safe return of allied soldiers, sailors and airmen and 'blown' agents of SOE, who had succeeded in either escaping from or were in the process of evading capture by the Germans and their collaborators.

He describes the astonishing courage and sacrifice of those heroic underground operators who ran these escape lines through Nazi-occupied Belgium and France, and elsewhere. Despite betrayal and infiltration from Germans, collaborators and traitors an ever present threat, over 3,000 men & women were safely brought back to live to 'fight another day' (in particular shot down Airmen over Europe who due to the increasing casualty rates were ruled high priority cases for urgent recovery, second only to SOE Operatives).

Jimmy Langley was later joined by another officer Airey Neave (who also did the foreword to this book) who after his historic home run from Oflag IVC Colditz Castle (POW Camp), was also posted to MI9. Together they had to wrestle with rival secret organisations for resources to carry out their own vital and equally important work.

Readers will gain a fascinating insiders view of the wartime secret services and the internal bickering that so bedeviled both MI9 and other groups like SOE in this work, with Jimmy in particular having very little time or patience for these kinds of games and for whom directness and blunt responses were something he was well known for giving when anyone tried to get one over him or his department.

All this and so much more is brilliantly described in this gripping, beautifully written book.

As seen in the Folkestone Herald (UK Newspaper) and most recently portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch in the BBC TV Documentary Series 'Dunkirk' (2004).

Jimmy Langley Passed in 1983 while his friend Airey Neave was killed by an IRA Car Bomb in 1979.

He was awarded the Military Cross (MC) for his actions in 1940 at Dunkirk & the MBE for his work with MI9. Originally Published 1974, Currently out of print but scheduled for a reprint sometime in 2021 by Pen & Sword. Meantime only available as a Digital title which was Released in 2013.

Due to be reissued in Paperback in 2021.
