Preface
The Eleventh European Conference on Few-Body Physics was held
from August 31 to September 5, 1987 at the Abbey of Fontevraud, France.
The first European Conference in Budapest in 1972 was followed by those
organized in Graz (1973), Tiibingen (1975), Vlieland (1976), Uppsala
(1977), Dubna (1979), Sesimbra (1980), Ferrara (1981), Tbilisi (1984), and
Balatonfiired (1985).
The conference was attended by about 100 physicists from 48 universi
ties and national laboratories in 21 countries. The goal of this conference
was to summarize the present status in few-particle research and to encom
pass few-body problems in various fields: molecular, atomic, nuclear, and
particle physics. For this purpose, experts from various research groups
were invited to give broad reviews and to speak about significant results re
cently obtained in these fields and related to their own work. The idea was
to stimulate sharp discussions about new progress in few-body physics and
to aim at a synthesis of the research activities that culminated in the many
successful meetings organized over the last two years.
The conference was divided into nine plenary and six parallel sessions.
The scientific opening address was given by Bernard Frois and the sum
mary closing the conference by Werner Sandhas. To all the speakers we ex
press our grateful and sincere thanks. The 85 papers submitted to the con
ference were published in a separate booklet distributed to the participants
and they were presented as posters. These proceedings contain all papers
delivered in plenary and parallel sessions.
During the conference also the traditional meeting of the representa
tives of few-body physics research from European countries was held. Ivo
Slaus, chairman of the committee, wished to retire after nearly 15 years in
office. We all are indebted to him for his important role in the pursuit of
few-body physics in Europe. He has recognized the importance of this field
at an early stage and encouraged its development in Europe. He has left his
own imprint on our community and he has influenced the progress of our
field by stimulating experimental physics. He still wants to participate in
the efforts of the committee but he suggested that Bernard Frois be ap
pointed as the new chairman. The international committee unanimously
endorsed this proposal.
This conference was supported and sponsored by the Institut de Phy
sique Nucleaire et de Physique des Particules, by the Institut de Recherche

Fondamentale du Commissariat I'Energie Atomique, by the Centre N a-

tional de la Recherche Scientifique, and by the Conseil Regional du De
partement de Maine et Loire. The organization of the conference in the Ab
bey of Fontevraud would not have been possible without the generous help
of our private sponsors. We express our warmest thanks to Coca Cola
France and its manager Mr. M. D'Ornano. We also thank Electricite de
