Acknowledgments
The idea of doing a collection on feminism and the self originated with the
editors of this series, Alison Jaggar and Virginia Held, and I want to thank
them for inviting me to prepare this volume. Their invitation gave me an op­
portunity that has proved extraordinarily rewarding. The contributors to
this volume share a commitment to feminist philosophy that has sparked in­
tellectually daring, uncompromisingly rigorous writing. Working with them
