Der Vorfall schafft böses Blut, und eine Konferenz wird einberufen, um zu schlichten. Eines ist jedenfalls klar, der Fall muß dringend aufgeklärt werden, bevor die Feindschaft zwischen Hunden und Katzen eskaliert. Könnte der Mörder vielleicht aus dem Tierasyl am Stadtrand gekommen sein, dessen Belegschaft in letzter Zeit sprunghaft zugenommen hat? Das ist zumindest eine Theorie von Francis. Er soll Licht in die Angelegenheit bringen. Doch als er erfährt, daß ihm ein Partner zur Seite gestellt werden soll, ist es mit Francis' Hilfsbereitschaft vorbei. Sein Kompagnon ist Hektor - ein Hund. Schlimmer noch: ein pensionierter Schäferhund, vormals im Polizeidienst tätig. Empört über dieses Ansinnen kehrt Francis der ganzen Angelegenheit den Rücken. Allerdings nicht ganz. Als Francis sich also trotz aller Vorbehalte in das Tierasyl begibt, macht er eine entscheidende Entdeckung. Er findet die Leiche eines Hundes, an dessen Halsband ein Medaillon mit der Aufschrift CAVE CANEM befestigt ist. Nach und nach kommt Francis dahinter, daß es im ehemaligen Jugoslawien eine Truppe von Minensuchhunden gab, die mit dieser Kennmarke ausgezeichnet waren. Doch wie kamen sie in ein deutsches Tierheim? Francis beschließt, der Sache nachzugehen - unter Einsatz seines Lebens - und kommt einer riesigen Verschwörung auf die Spur...
