Abstract:The'Hessecollection'ofspiders(Araneae)and harvestmen (Opiliones) intheMuseumfürNaturkunde
Berlinisdocumented.Biographicalnoteson Erich Hesse-aformerarachnidcuratoratthemuseum(1921-1940)
-areprovided.The'Hessecollection'wasactuallyputtogetherbyotherworkers,andcan bebroadlydividedinto
twoparts.Onecomesfrom Bielinek(=Bellinchen)onthePolish sideoftheOderValley(WestPommerania);now
partofthe'UnteresOdertal'NationalPark.ThisBielinekmaterialincludesnotablerecordsofHeriaeusoblongusSimon,
1918 and Gibbaraneaullrichi(Hahn, 1835).The other part ofthe collection comesfrom Colbitz-Letzlinger Heide in
Saxony-Anhalt,Germany.Notable here arePistiustruncatus(Pallas,1772) and PhilodromusbuchariKubcovä,2004;the
latterrepresentingthefirstrecord ofthisspeciesforSaxony-Anhalt.

The arachnological section of the Museum für
Naturkunde Berlin houses a number of, primarily
regional, ‘special collections’ [Sondersammlungen]
which are not integrated into the main systematic
collection due to their focus on a particular set of
localities and/or individuals.These may prove to be
ofsomevaluefor,e.g.,regionalfaunistic studies, and
as part ofwhat we hope will be a series ofpapers
documenting these special collections, we begin by
focusingon materialassembledbythe formerBerlin
curator,ErichHesse.Thesespecimenswerecollected
during the 1930s from Bielinek in western Poland
andColbitz-LetzlingerHeideinthestateofSaxony-
Anhaltin Germany.
MaterialandMethods
The‘Hessecollection’comprisesca.200jars,allcon-

tainingmaterialin70 alcohol.Itiscurrentlyhoused
separatelyfromthemaincollection.Theoriginaljars
were rather small, and all specimens were recently
