EDITORIALPREFACE
This volume originated from a session organised by Bruno Blondé, Natacha
Coquery and Jon Stobart at the Eight International Conference on Urban History in
Stockholm, 2006. Hence the editors would like to thank the board of the European Asso-
ciation of Urban Historians for granting them the possibility to organise the major session.
The session’s chief aim was to describe the relationship between the buying and selling of
‘new’ and ‘old’ goods in the seventeenth-nineteenth centuries. In line with the general
approach of the conference –‘Urban Europe in Comparative Perspective’– a comparative
perspective was envisaged with contributions varying in thematic approaches as well as
chronological and geographical scope. Although the majority of papers were presented at
the Stockholm-conference, some contributions were recruited afterwards to improve the
homogeneity of this present volume.
Thanks are due to the editorial board of the Brepols-Series ‘Studies in European
Urban History’, and especially to the series editor, Marc Boone (Ghent University) for
accepting this volume into the series. Additional funding for the publication of this volume
