Preface
Throughout the past 30 years, there have been significant developments in
theory and research relating family variables to various psychopathologies. The
potential importance of such efforts is obviously great, given the implications
that reliable and valid findings would hold for treatment and preventive inter
ventions across a variety of settings and populations. The purpose of this volume
is to present a critical evaluation of this field of inquiry through a detailed
assessment of the theoretical perspectives, the methodological issues, and the
substantive findings that have characterized family studies of psychopathology
during the past several decades. The book is divided into four parts, each con
taining contributions from leading researchers and theorists in the field.
The first part, "Background," presents a review of the major streams of
influence that have shaped the development and the present character of the
field.
The second part, "Conceptual Foundations," contains presentations of gen
eral models and orientations relevant to family studies of psychopathology. In
most cases, a particular theoretical perspective provides the primary underpin
ning of the approach, the exception to this format being the family model of
David Reiss based on the concept of the family paradigm. The major objective of
this part is to present a broad yet detailed set of chapters that address the
conceptual status of the field. It is hoped that this material will provide a rich
background against which subsequent discussions of specific theories, methods,
and findings can be more fully appreciated.
The third part, "Methodological Issues and Strategies," surveys the critical
issues that have characterized family studies of psychopathology since the
mid-1 960s. Each contributor to this section discusses a key methodological topic
(or set of related issues) that is of particular importance to the quality of data the
researcher obtains in his or her attempt to probe family-interaction-psycho
pathology associations. The topics of these six chapters are: (a) design and re
search strategies; (b) reliability and validity issues in the use of observation data;
(c) coding systems in marital and family research; (d) self-report procedures in
family assessment; (e) sequential analysis of family data; and (f) participant
observation procedures in family assessment.
The final part, "Family Research on Specific Psychopathologies," contains a
set of contributions that summarize the current state of knowledge regarding the

family's role in four types of disordered behavior: (a) schizophrenia; (b) child
hood disturbance; (c) alcoholism; and (d) depression. Because it was not reason
able to expect contributors to this section to have expertise in both psychosocial
and genetics literatures, a final chapter reviews the evidence for hereditary
influences in major and minor psychopathologies.
Currently, no single publication exists that presents a comprehensive, up-to
date contribution to this field. Rather, material relevant to family studies of
psychopathology is scattered across various disciplines and research provinces,
and there is too little awareness and appreciation of the broader field of inquiry
within which separate investigations and theory developments are housed. Given
the breadth and depth of coverage to which this book aspires, it should become a
major resource in evaluating the complex and increasingly voluminous literature
on family studies of psychopathology. It is hoped that the critical appraisals and
insights of the contributors to this volume will sharpen our view of the field and
will significantly enhance the quality of subsequent efforts in this domain of
study.
