Contadini ingenui e mogli piu o meno fedeli, di solito maliziose e avide, sono vittime della simpatica e a tratti severa, ironia della favolista: la donna, condannata perche come Eva ( favola 53) e tentatrice, traditrice e bugiarda, viene anche celebrata per la sua esemplare abilita retorica che l’aiuta a liberarsi da situazioni pericolose, come quando, colta dal marito in flagrante adulterio, riesce a salvarsi grazie alla sua bella eloquenza (favola 44). Motivata in generale a difendere i piu deboli, come l’agnello abbandonato dalla madre (favola 32), Maria non esita a protestare contro certi ingiusti processi dell’epoca e contro la corruzione dei giudici di cui erano i piu poveri a fare le spese (favola 4), invitando anche le madri a prendere atto della loro responsabilita (favola 21). Cosi, perduta l’atmosfera incantata di certi lais e dei romanzi arturiani, favola dopo favola Maria rappresenta una societa alle prese con la faticosa soluzione dei problemi della vita quotidiana. E difficile credere alla favolista quando afferma: ‘ Nessuno deve dar credito alle favole,che sono solo menzogne’.
