Preface
It was 1999 whenExtremeProgrammingExplainedwas first published, making this
year’s event arguably the fifth anniversary of the birth of the XP/Agile movementin
software development.Our fourthconferencereflected the evolutionand the learning
that have occurredin these exciting five years as agile practices have become part of
themainstreaminsoftwaredevelopment.ThesepagesaretheproceedingsofXPAgile
Universe2004,heldinbeautifulCalgary,gatewaytotheCanadianRockies,inAlberta,
Canada.
Evidentintheconferenceisthefactthatourlearningisstillinitsearlystages.While
attimesoverlooked,adaptationhasbeenacoreprincipleofagilesoftwaredevelopment
sincetheearliestliteratureonthesubject.Theconferenceandtheseproceedingsrein-
forcethatprinciple.Althoughsomeorganizationsareabletopracticeagilemethodsin
thenear-pureform,mostarenot,reflectingjusthowradicallyinnovativethesemethods
aretothisday.Anyinnovationmustcoexistwithanexistingenvironmentandagilesoft-
ware developmentis no different.There are numerouschallengesconfrontingIT and
software developmentorganizationstoday,with manysolutionspitchedby a cadre of
advocates.BeitCMM,offshoring,outsourcing,security,oroneofmanyothercurrent
topicsintheindustry,teamsusingortransitioningtoExtremeProgrammingandother
agilepracticesmustintegratewiththerestoftheorganizationinordertosucceed.The
papershereoffersomeofthelatestexperiencesthatteamsarehavinginthoseefforts.
XPAgileUniverse2004consistedofworkshops,tutorials,papers,panels,theOpen
Space session, the Educators’ Symposium,keynotes, educationalgames and industry
presentations.Thiswiderangeofactivitieswasintendedtoprovideanengagingexpe-
rience forindustrypractitioners,leadingconsultants,researchers,academics,andstu-
dents.Feedbackfromthe2003conferencewasusedtoadjustthecontenttobettersuit
the needs of the attendees. The sessions at the conference were selected through the
dedicatedworkoftheTrackChairsandtheProgramCommittee,towhomweareex-
tremelygrateful.Theirnamesare listedin thepagesthatfollowandthecontributions
oftheseindividualstotheexperienceoftheattendeesoftheconferencecannotbeover-
stated.Over100submissionswerereceivedtothevariousactivities,withroughlyhalf
acceptedintotheconference.Eachsubmissionwasreviewedbyatleast3membersof
theProgramCommittee,withanaverageofjustunder5reviewerspersubmission.The
acceptedpapersarepresentedintheirentiretyintheseproceedings.Summariesofthe
workshopsandtutorialsarepresentedasareferenceforthosewhoattendedtheconfer-

The invited speakers to the conference were Christopher Avery, Robert Biddle,
Eric Evans, Alejandro Goyen, Craig Larman, Brian Marick, Robert C. Martin, Mary
Poppendieck,and Herb Sutter. These speakers representthe breadthand depth of the
conference in terms of three main threads: technical practices; business and project
management;andteamwork.

Thetutorialsandworkshopscontinuedthetrendbeyondtheprogrammingtrenches,
focusingprimarilyonrequirements,projectmanagement,andacceptance-testingtech-
niques,withsomeintroductorysessionsforattendeesnewtoextremeprogrammingand
agilepractices.Theconferencealsocontinueditshistorywithhands-onprogramming
eventswhichallowedattendeestojoinprojectsthatranthroughouttheconferenceusing
thetoolsandpracticescommononagileteams.
Intheseproceedings,onecanfindarichsetofpapersreflectiveoftheexperiences
of leading practitioners. Eighteen technical and research papers, experience reports,
andeducators’symposiumpaperswereacceptedoutofatotalof45submissions,rep-
resentinganacceptancerateof40%.Anumberofpapersprovideadvanceddiscussion
ontoolsandtechniquesfortestingandthetrendtowardscombiningtherequirements,
testing,andspecificationactivities.Threepapersdiscussmethodsforbetterunderstand-
ing and expressing the customer or user needs in an agile way. For readers who are
confronted with many of the challenges faced by today’s environment,such as secu-
rityconcerns,CMMauditing,andoffshoredevelopmentteams,therearerepresentative
papersdescribingtheuseofagiledevelopmenttechniquesinthoseenvironments.
We are deeply indebted to the organizingcommittee and the conferencesponsors
forprovidingthe infrastructureformakingthe conferencehappen.Thecontentofthe
conference and these proceedings would not have been possible without the submis-
sionsandalloftheeffortthatgoesintothem.Forthosecourageousenoughtosubmit
