Abstract:Understandinghowphysicalpropertiesoftheenvironmentunderpinhabitatselectionoflargema-
rinevertebratesiscrucialinidentifyinghowandwhereanimalsacquireresourcesnecessaryforlocomotion,
growth and reproduction and ultimately their fitness. The Southern Ocean harbors one of the largest and
mostdynamicmarineecosystemsonourplanetwhicharisesfromthepresenceoftwomajorsphysicalfea-
turesdominatingtheecosystemdynamics,(i)theAntarcticCircumpolarCurrentand(ii)theseasonalseaice
coverregion. IntheAntarctic,marinepredatorsareexposedtoclimate-inducedshiftsinatmosphericcircula-
tionandseaice. However,becausetheseshiftsvaryregionally,andbecausemuchremainstobeunderstood
abouthowindividualanimalsusetheirenvironment,ithasbeendifficulttomakepredictionsonhowanimals
mayrespondtoclimatevariability. Spatio-temporalvariabilityinecosystemstructureandfunctionarelikely
totranslateintomodificationoftoppredatorpopulationdynamics,however,thereiscurrentlyalong-standing
gapinourunderstandingofecosystemfunctioningunderwinterAntarcticseaice. Southernelephantseals
(Miroungaleonina)areamajorconsumerofSouthernOceanresourcesandusetwomainlargescaleforaging
strategies,(i)feedinginthefrontalzoneoftheSouthernOcean,or(ii)feedingintheseasonalseaiceregion.
InthepresentthesisIexaminedthewinterpost-moultingforagingstrategiesof46maleandfemaleKergue-
lensouthernelephantsealswhichutilizedthesecondstrategy. Usinganelevenyeartime-seriesoftracking,
diving,andseal-collectedhydrographicdata(from2004-2014)weassessedtheirmovementsandforagingper-
formanceinrelationtoinsituhydrographicandseaiceconditions.Theinfluenceofboththespatio-temporal
andinter-annualvariabilityofseaicearoundseallocationswasinvestigated,andaninvestigationontherole
ofpolynyaformalesouthernelephantsealduringwinterconducted.
Twogeneralsexspecificpatternsofseaiceusagewereobserved: femalestendedtomovewiththeiceedge
asitextendednorthward,andthemalesremainedonthecontinentalshelfdespiteincreasingseaice. Female
foragingactivitywasgreaterovershallowerseabeddepthsandattheboundarybetweentheoverlyingAntarctic
SurfaceWater(AASW)andtheunderlyingModifiedCircumpolarDeepWater(MCDW).Theyalsoforagedmore
intheouterpartofthepackice, 150-370kmsouthoftheiceedgeinlateautumn. Withinpersistentregions
ofcompactseaice,femalesforagedmostintensively(i)inthehighestseaiceconcentrationattheirposition,
but(ii)theirforagingactivitywaslongerwhenthereweremorepatchesoflowconcentrationseaicearound
theirposition(eitherintimeorinspace; 30daysand50km). Thehighspatio-temporalvariabilityofseaice
aroundfemalepositionsprobablyallowedthemtoexploitconcentratedseaicepatcheswhilestillhavingregu-
laraccesstoopenwater. Despitethelackofinformationonpreyavailability,femalesmayexploittheicealgal
autumnbloomthatsustainsmeso-pelagicpreyintheunder-iceecosystem. Theymayalsotakeadvantageof
fishesoverwinteringattheupperboundaryoftheMCDW.Inmarkedcontrast, themales’foragingeffortin-
creasedwhentheyweredeepwithinseaiceovertheshelf(420-960kmfromtheiceedge).Maleforagedmost
intensively(i)inthelowestseaiceconcentrationattheirposition, and(ii)theirforagingactivitywaslonger
whenthereweremorepatchesoflowconcentrationseaicearoundtheirposition(eitherintimeorinspace;30
daysand50km). Twodistinctforagingstrategieswereobservedformales: (i)PelagicdiveswithintheAntarc-
ticSlopeFrontonthecontinentalshelfbreakwhereupwellingofnutrientrichCircumpolarDeepWateronto
surfacewatermayenhanceandconcentrateresources;(ii)shallowerpelagicandbenthicdiveswithincoastal
polynyassustainingbiologicallyrichecosystemsthroughouttheiceseason.Forthefirsttime,wedemonstrated
thatcoastalpolynyasinEastAntarcticaare“winteroases”formalesouthernelephantsealsspendingupto75
%oftheirtotalforagingtripinthem. Theautumntransitionisakeymomentinthewinterforagingecology
ofsealswiththehighestforagingactivity,divedurationanddeepestdivesobservedinsidepolynyas. Theseals
maytakeadvantageofthesecondaryproductionresultingfromthedeepeningoftheseasonalmixed-layer,en-
trainingtheremnantdeepchlorophyllmaximumintothesurfacelayerandpresumablystimulatinganautumn
bloom. Finally,Idemonstratetheroleofinter-annualvariabilityofnear-surfacemeridionalwinds, incorpo-
ratinglarge-scaleclimaticvariability,ininfluencingforagingactivityoffemalesouthernelephantsealsthrough
theireffectsonthetimingofseaiceadvance.Yearsofstrongermeridionalwindsmayleadtoearlierseaicead-
vance,andbothassociatedwithincreasedforagingactivitypresumablythroughtrophiccascadingeffectfrom
enhancedicealgalautumnbloomtosouthernelephantsealprey.
This work contributes to better understand the ecological mechanisms taking place in the under sampled
under-iceecosystem,whileelucidatingacrucialpartoftheannualcycleofamajortoppredatoroftheSouthern
Ocean.Italsoproposesmechanismsbywhichclimateforcingaffectsbothabioticandbioticcomponentsofthe
Antarcticmarineecosystem.InthecontextoftheKerguelensouthernelephantsealpopulation,thecapacityof
sealstoemploytwoforagingstrategies(frontalorAntarcticzonestrategies)mayconferonthepopulationthe
abilitytoadapttoshort-term(decadal)variationsonresourceavailability,presumablyexplainingthecurrent
stabledemographictrendofthepopulation.

mifèresacquièrentlesressourcesnécessairesàleurdéplacement, leurcroissance, leurreproductionetdonc
leursurvie.DanslazoneAntarctiquerecouvertesaisonnièrementparlaglace,lesprédateursmarinssontcon-
frontésàdesmodificationsdelacirculationatmosphériqueetdelabanquisesousl’effetduchangementet/ou
variabilitéclimatique.Cependantildemeuredifficiledeprédirelaréponsedecesprédateursauxvariationsde
leurenvironnementphysiquecarceschangementssontdifférentssuivantlessecteursdel’OcéanAustraletla
compréhensiondel’utilisationdeleurenvironnementetleurstratégied’alimentationestencoreincomplète.
Deplus,nosconnaissancesencoretrèsparcellairessurlefonctionnementdesécosystèmessouslabanquise
enhiverlimitentnotreinterprétationdel’influencedesvariationsspatio-temporellesdesécosystèmesAntarc-
tiques sur la dynamique de ces prédateurs. Les éléphants de mer du Sud (Mirounga leonina) se déplacent
dansl’océanaustralàl’échelledesbassinsocéaniquesdepuisleurcoloniesubantarctiquepours’alimenteren
plongeantenmoyenneà500metjusqu’à2000mdeprofondeur.Enfonctiondeleurcolonied’origine,deleur
sexe,etdeleurâge,ilsexploitentdesrégionsradicalementdifférentesdel’océanaustral,mettantainsienœuvre
desstratégiesalimentairesdiversifiées. LeséléphantsdemerdeKerguelenutilisentdeuxzonespréférentielle-
ment:lazoneduFrontPolaireoulazoneAntarctiquecouverteparlabanquise.Danscettethèse,lesstratégies
alimentairesdesvoyagespost-mueAntarctiquesde46mâlesetfemelleséléphantsdemerdeKerguelenontété
étudiées. Unesérietemporellede11années(2004-2014)dedonnéesdedéplacement,deplongéesetdedon-
néeshydrologiquesaétéanalyséepourdéterminerlerôledesparamètresocéanographiquesetdeglacesdemer
impliquésdansl’acquisitiondesressourcesalimentairesdeséléphantsdemerenAntarctique.L’influencedela
variabilitéspatio-temporelleetinterannuelledelaglacedemerassociéeàlapositiondesmâlesetdesfemelles
ainsiquelerôledespolyniescôtièressurlesstratégiesalimentairesdesmâlesenhiverontétéexaminés.
Deuxcomportementsdifférentsentrelesmâlesetlesfemellesontétéobservésenrelationaveclaprésencede
laglacedemer: lesfemellessuiventlalisièredeglacequis’étendauNordaucoursdelasaisonmaisrestent
danslazoneditedu"pack";enrevanche,lesmâlesrestentsurleplateauAntarctiquemalgrél’extensiondela
banquiseversleNord. L’activitéalimentairedesfemelles,déterminéeparunindexdetempspasséenchasse,
estpluslongueenAutomneprocheduplateauAntarctique,danslapartieextérieuredu"pack",150–370km
auSuddelalisièredesglaces,etsurlaverticale,àlafrontièreentrel’eauAntarctiquedesurfaceetl’eaucircum-
polairemodifiée(mCDW).Dansunenvironnementcomposédeglacesconcentréesetpersistantes,letemps
desfemellespasséenchasseestplusimportantdanslesparcellesdeglacelesplusconcentrées,maisassociées
àdefortesvariabilitésspatio-temporellesdelaconcentrationdeglace(30jourset50kmautourdelaposition).
Lafortevariabilitéspatio-temporelledelaglaceautourdelapositiondesfemellesleurpermetprobablement
d’exploiterdesparcellesdeglacetrèsconcentrées, toutengarantissantunaccèsrégulieràlasurfaceautour
d’elles. Malgrélemanqued’informationsurladisponibilitédesproies, j’émetsl’hypothèsequelesfemelles
bénéficientindirectementdubloomautomnaldanslabanquisepermettantdesouteniruneproductionsec-
ondaireetd’attirerdesproiesmésopélagiquesàdesprofondeursmoindressouslabanquise. Ellespourraient
aussibénéficierdepoissonsmésopélagiquesseréfugiantenhiveràlafrontièreentrel’eaufroideAntarctique
desurfaceetl’eaucircumpolairemodifiéepluschaudeetricheennutriments. Contrairementauxfemelles,
letempsdechassedesmâlesestplusimportantsurleplateau,lorsqu’ilssetrouventtrèsprofondémentdans
lazonedesglaces, entre420et960kmdelalisière. Cependant, letempsdechassedesmâlesestpluslong
danslesparcelleslesmoinsconcentréesenglace(àleurpositionet30jourset50kmautourdelaposition).
Pourlesmâles,deuxstratégiesdistinctesd’alimentationontétéobservées: (i)desplongéespélagiquesdans
lecourantdepenteAntarctiqueoùlaremontéed’eaucircumpolairemodifiéericheennutrimentsensurface
pourrait augmenter et concentrer les ressources ; (ii) des plongées peu profondes benthiques et pélagiques
danslespolyniescôtièressoutenantunricheécosystèmetoutaulongdelasaisondesglaces. J’aiégalement
démontrélerôleimportantdespolyniescôtièrescommeoasishivernauxpourlesmâleséléphantsdemer,qui
demeurent jusqu’à 75% du temps total de leur voyage alimentaire dans ces zones. La transition automnale
semble être un moment clé de l’écologie alimentaire des mâles dans les polynies avec la plus grande activ-
itéalimentaire,duréedeplongéeetprofondeurcomparésauxautresmois. J’émetsl’hypothèsequelesmâles
exploitentlaproductionsecondaireetlesproiesassociéesrésultantdel’approfondissementdelacouchede
mélangeentrainantlaconvectiondumaximumdechlorophylledanslescouchesdesurface,stimulantainsi
un bloom automnal en juin. Finalement, j’ai démontré le rôle important de la variabilité interannuelle des
ventsdesurfaceméridionaux,incorporantlavariabilitéclimatiqueàlargeéchelle,surl’activitéalimentairedes
femellesàtraverssoneffetsurladated’avancéedelaglacedemer. Letempsdechasseestplusimportant
lesannéesoùlesventssoufflantdusudsontplusfortsetoùlaglaceseformeplustôtdanslasaison. J’émets
l’hypothèsequ’uneformationetuneavancéeanticipéedelaglace,probablementsousl’actiondesfortsvents
méridionaux,entrainentl’incorporationd’uneplusgrandequantitédephytoplanctonprésentdanslacolonne
d’eau. Cecifavoriseunbloomautomnaldesalguesdeglaceplusintenseetpermetparl’intermédiairedecas-
cadestrophiquesdesoutenirunécosystèmeplusrichesouslaglaceetdoncd’augmenterl’activitéalimentaire
desfemelles.
Cestravauxdethèsecontribuentàunemeilleurecompréhensiondesprocessusécologiquesintervenantau
seindesécosystèmesvivantsouslabanquisetoutenélucidantunepartiecrucialeducycledevied’unpréda-
teurdel’OcéanAustral. Ilsproposentaussidesmécanismesparlesquelslesforçagesclimatiquesaffectentles
élémentsbiotiquesetabiotiquesdesécosystèmesmarinsantarctiques.Al’échelledelapopulationd’éléphants
demerdesIlesKerguelen,lacapacitéàmaintenirdeuxstratégiesd’alimentationdifférentes(stratégiefrontale
ouantarctique)pourraitpermettredecompenserlesvariationsdécennalesdedisponibilitédesressources,ex-
pliquantprobablementlatendancedémographiqueactuellestabledecettepopulation.
