Introduction
All praise and thanks are for Allah. We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His
forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from the evil of ourselves and from the
evil of our actions. Whoever Allah guides, no one can misguide and whoever He
allows to go astray, there is no one who can guide.
I bear witness that there is no one worthy of worship except Allah alone,
without partners, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and
Messenger.
This book is an explanation of the well-known treatise ‘Al-Usool Ath-
Thalaatha’ (The Three Fundamental Principles) by Imaam Muhammad Ibn
AbdulWahhaab (may Allah bestow mercy upon him). This explanation is
distinguished from others in that we have endeavoured to use diagrams and
tables in order to facilitate visual learning.
The notes have been taken from the lessons of our Shaykh Haytham Sarhaan
(may Allah preserve him) who is known for his great efforts in teaching
Aqeedah and other Islamic sciences in Masjid an-Nabawi in Madeenah.; he has
many students throughout various lands.
Our Shaykh is known and recognised by the senior scholars, and his teaching
method is unique amongst the scholars – focusing on memorisation, small
groups of students and constant assessments and examinations. Shaykh
Haytham Sarhaan’s teaching method is reflected in the contents of this book
and in the manner it has been organised and laid out.
We ask Allah, the Kind and Merciful, to place such efforts in the scales of
goodness of the Shaykh, translators and everybody who had a role in
producing this booklet.

Know, may Allah have mercy upon
you, that it is obligatory upon us to عَبرَْ أ مُ لعَ َت اَن يَْلعَ بُ يََِ ُهَّنَأ ُالله كَ َحِْرَ مْلعْإ
have knowledge of four matters: ِ
-:لئاسم
1.Knowledge: which is knowledge َ َ َ
and awareness of Allah; knowledge of هِ ِيَِِن ُةَفرِ عْمَوَ ،ِالله ُةَفرِعْمَ وَهُوَ مُلِْعْلا :لَىوُلأا
His Prophet; and knowledge of the
religion of Islaam with the evidences. نِ يدِ ُةَفرِعْمَوَ ،)ملسو هيلع الله ىلص(
2.Righteous actions: based upon ةَِّلدَِلأبا مِلاسلإِا
ْ
one’s knowledge.
3.Da’wah: propagating it and calling هِِب لُ مَعَْلا :ُةىيِناَّثلا
to it.
4.Patience: upon the harms هِيَْلِإ ُةوَعْدَّلا :ُةىثِلاَّثلا
encountered upon this way. هِيِف ىَذَلأا ىَلعَ رُ ِْصَّ لا :ُةعىِبارَّلا
The proof is His saying, the Most
High:
ِ
{By time, indeed mankind is in :لََاعَ َت ُهُلوْ َق ُليلدَّلاوَ
loss; except those who truly َّلاِإ رٍسْ خُ يفِىل نى اسى نلإِ ا نَِّإ رِصْ عىْلاوى{
believe; perform righteous deeds;
encourage each other upon the اوْ صى اوى ىتوى تِ اىلِِاصَّ لا اوُلمِعىوى اوُنمىآ نى يذَِّلا
truth and encourage each other
with patience} [Soorah al-‘Asr] }بِْْصَّ لبِِ اوْصى اوى ىتوى ق ِىلِْ بِِ
Ash-Shaafi’ee (may Allah have mercy ِ
upon him) said: “If Allah had revealed لَزَ ْنَأ امَ وَْل(( – الله هحْر – ي عفاشَّ لا لَاَق
to His creation any other evidence َةرَوس لا هِذِهَ لاِإ هِقِلْخَ ىَلعَ ًةجَّ حُ ُالله
besides this Soorah, it would have
been sufficient for them.” ))مْهُ تْفَكََل
Al-Bukhaaree said: “Chapter: لِوْقَلا لَ ِْ َق مُلِْعلا بُ باَ(( :ي رِاخَ ُِلا لَاَقوَ
Knowledge comes before speech and
action.” ))لِمعْلاو
ََ َ

The proof is the saying of Allah, the ِ
Most High: :لََاعَ َت ُهُلوْ َق ُليلدَّلاوَ
{Know that none has the right to رْفِْْ ىت ْ اوى ََُّ ا َّ لاِإ هلا ىلا ُهَّنىأ مْىلعْ اىف{
be worshipped except Allah, and
ask forgiveness of your Lord for }كى ِبنذىِل
your sins} [47:19]

Skon oHwel ebdeggaen b ebfyo mree snpteioecnhin agn d action. لِمَعَلاوَ لِوْقَلا لَ ِْ َق مِلِْعْلباِ َأدََِ َف

Know, may Allah have mercy upon
you, that it is obligatory upon every مٍِل سْ مُ ل ِكُ ىَلعَ بُ يََِ هَّنَأ ُالله كَ َحِْرَ مَْلعْا
Muslim, male and female, to learn لُ مَعَْلاو لِئا سَ مَ ثِ لاَّثلا ِهذِهَ مُ لعَ َت ،ةٍمَِلسْ مُوَ
and act upon the following three

matters: -:نَّبِ

The first: That Allah created us and
sustains us; He did not leave us اَنكْرُ تَْ ي ْ لَوَ ،اَن َقزَرَوَ ،اَنقََلخَ َالله نََّأ :لَىوُلأا
without a purpose, rather, He sent ُه عَاَطَأ نْ مََف ،ًلاوسُرَ اَن يَْلِإ لَ سَرَْأ لَْب ،لاَهََ
Messengers to us. So whoever obeys
راَّنلا لخد هاصع نمو ،ةَّنلجا لخد
them will enter Paradise, and َ َ َ َ ُ َ َ ْ ََ َ َ َ َ َ
whoever disobeys them will enter the

Fire.

ِ
The proof is the saying of the Most :لََاعَ َت ُهُلوْ َق ُليلدَّلاوَ
High:

{Indeed We have sent a Messenger
to you, just as We sent a Messenger مْكُ يْىل عى ًادهِاشى ًلاو ُرى مْكُ يْىلِإ اىنلْ ىرْىأ نََِّّإ{
to Pharaoh. But Pharaoh denied
and rejected the Messenger, so We ى صى عى ىف * ًلاو ُرى نىوْعىرِْف لَىِإ اىنلْ ىرْىأ امىكى
seized him with a severe
punishment} [73:15-16] }ً ليِبوى ًاذخْ ىأ ُهنَّىذْخىىأىف لىو ُرَّلا نُوْعىرِْف

The second: Allah is not pleased that
anyone should be made a partner ُهعَمَ كَرَشْ ُي نَْأ ىضَ رَْ ي لا الله نََّأ :ُةىيِناَّثلا
with Him in Worship, neither any يبَِن لاوَ ،بٌ رَّقَمُ كٌ َلمَ لا ،هِِتدَاَِعِ فِِ دُحََأ
angel brought near, nor any Prophet
؛لسرم
sent as a Messenger. ٌ َ ُْ
The proof is the saying of Allah (the

Most High):
{The places of worship are for ىلى ف ََِِّ دىجِاسى مىْلا نَّىأوى{: لََاعَ َت ُهُلوْ َق ُليِ لدَّلاوَ
Allah alone, so do not invoke
ِ
anyone along with Allah} [72: 18] }ًادحى ىأ ََّ ا عى مى اوُعدْىت

The third: Whoever is obedient to ِ
َالله دَ حَّوَوَ ،لَوسُرَّلا عَاَطَأ نْ مَ نََّأ :ُةىثلاَّثلا
the Messenger and worships Allah
upon Tawheed, it is not permissible
وَْلوَ ،ُهَلوسُرَوَ َالله دَّاحَ نْ مَ ُةلااوَمُ ُهَل زُوُيََ لا
for him to have love and alliance for
those who oppose Allah and His بٍ يرَِق بَ رَ ْقَأ نَاكَ
Messenger, even if they are those
ِ
most closely related to him. The لََاعَ َت ُهُلوْ َق ُليلدَّلاوَ
proof is His saying: {You will not
find a people who believe in Allah
aonpdpo tshee A Llalasth D aanyd l Hovisin Mg etshsoesneg werh, o رِخِلآا مِوْ ىيْلاوى ََِّ بِِ نىوُنمِؤُْ ي ًاموْ ىق دُتَِى ىلا{
even if they are their fathers, or
اوُ ناكى وْىلوى ُهىلو ُرىوى ىََّ ا دَّاحى نْ مى نىودُّاوىُ ي
their sons, or their brothers, or
their kinsfolk. Allah has decreed وْىأ مْهُ ىناوىخْ ِإ وْىأ مْهُءاىن ْبىأ وْىأ مْهُىءبِىآ
true Belief for their hearts, and
strengthened them with guidance نى اىمَلإِ ا مُِبِِوُل ُق فِِ بى ىتكى كى ِئىلوُْأ مْهُ ىتيرى شِ عى
from Him; and He will enter them يرِْتَى تٍ اَّنجى مْهُُلخِدُْيوى ُهنْم ِ حٍورُِب مهُدىَّيى أوى
into the gardens of Paradise
ِ ِ ِِ ِ ِ
beneath whose trees rivers will ََُّ ا يى ضرى اهىيف نى يدلاخى رُاهى ْنىلأا اهىتْتَى نم
flow, and they will dwell therein
ِ ِ ِ
forever. Allah is pleased with them ىلاى أ ََّ ا بُ زْح كى ئىلوُْأ ُهنْعى اوضُ رىوى مْهُ نْعى
and they with Him. They are the { نىوحُ لِفْمُْلا مُهُ ََِّ ا بى زْحِ نَِّإ
party of Allah. Indeed the party of
Allah are the successful} [52:18]

Know, may Allah direct you to His َةَّلمِ َةَّي فِيِنَلْْ ا نََّأ ،هِِتعَاَطِل ُالله كَدَشَرَْأ مَْلعْإ
obedience, Haneefiyyah (the true and
straight Religion) - the way of ُهَ ل اصً ِلْمُُ ،ُهدَحْوَ َالله دَُِعْ َت نَْأ :مَيهِارَ ْبِإ
Iabloranhee, emma k-i insg t hthaet yRoeuli gwioonrs phuipr eAlyll ah ،سِ اَّنلا عَيجََِ ُالله رَمََأ كَ ِلذَِبوَ .نَيدِ لا
and sincerely for Him. This is what اَلََ مْهُقََلخَوَ
Allah commanded all of the people

with, and He created them for this.
Allah (the Most High) says: :لََاعَ َت لَاَق امَكَ

{eIx dceidp tn toht actr tehaetey jsihnonu aldn dw morasnhkipin d }نِودُُبعْ ىيِل َّلاِإ سى ْنلإِ اوى نَِّلْْ ا تُ قْىلخى امىوى{
ِ ِ ِ
Me} [51:56] The meaning of “Worship نودحو ي :نودِع ي نَعمو
ُ َُ َُُْ َََْ
me” is ‘to single Allah out with all

worship.’

The greatest command of Allah is دُارَ ْفِإ :وَهُوَ ، دُِيحوْ َّتلا هِِب ُالله رَمََأ امَ مَُظعَْأوَ
Tawheed which is to single out Allah
.ِةداِِعْلباِ ِالله
with all worship. َ َ
The most serious thing that He ِ
forbade is Shirk, which is to call ُةوَعْدَ :وَهُوَ ، كُرش لا هنْعَ ىهََ ن امَ مَُظعَْأوَ
others besides Him. ،ُهعَمَ ِهيِْْغَ
The proof of this is His Saying (The
ِ
Most High): لََا عَ َت ُهُلوْ َق ُليلدَّلاوَ
{Worship Allah alone and do not }ً ائيْشى هِِب ْاوكُرِشْ ُت ىلاوى ىَ ا ْاودُُبعْ اوى{
associate any partner to Him}
[04:36]

So if it said to you: ‘What are the بُ يََِ تِِلا ُةَثلاَّثلا لُوصُ ُلأا امَ :كَ َل لَ يِق اَذإَِف
three principles which a person must
know?’ Then say: (1) The servant’s دِِْعَْلا ُةَفرِعْمَ :لْ قُ َف ؟اهَ ُت َفرِعْمَ نِاسَ ْنلإِا ىَلعَ
kRneloiwgiloend;g aen odf (H3)is H Lios rPdr;o (p2)h Heti s هيلع الله ىلص( ادًمََّمُُ ُهَّيَِِنوَ ،ُهَنيدِوَ ،ُهَّبرَ
Muhammad (sal Allahu alayhi wa )ملسو
sallam).

Tyohue: f‘Wirshto p irs iynocuipr lLeo: rSdo? ’i f it is said to ؟كَ برَ نْ مَ :كَ َل لَ يِق اَذإَِف :لولأا لصلأا
Then say: ‘My Lord is Allah, who has عَي جََِ بََّّرَوَ ،نِِباَّرَ يذَِّلا ُالله بَِ ِرَ :لْ قُ َف
nurtured me and nurtured all of
creation with His blessings. He is the لِ سَ يَْل يدِوُِعْمَ وَهُوَ ،هِمِعَِنِب ينَ مَِلاعَْلا
One whom I worship and I have no ِ
هاوس دوِعم
other deity that I worship besides ُ َ ٌ َُْ

Him.’
ِ
The proof is His saying, the Most لََاعَ َت ُهُلوْ َق ُليلدَّلاوَ
High:
{All praise is for Allah, the Lord of }ينى مِىلاعىْلا ب ِ رى ََِّ دُمْىلِْ ا{
all creation} [01:01]

ِ ِ ِ ِ
Everything besides Allah is a created نْ م دٌحاوَ نَََأوَ ،ٌلَاعَ الله ىوَس نْ مَ ل كُوَ
being and I am one of the creation.
.لَِاعَْلا كَ ِلَذ
If it is said to you: ‘How did you come ؟كَ َّبرَ تَ ْفرَعَ َبِِ :كَ َل لَ يِق اَذإَِف
to know of your Lord?’
Then say: ‘Through His signs and His ُليَّْللا هِِتيََآ نْ مِوَ هِِتاَقوُلْمَُوَ هِِتيََبِِ :لْ قُ َف
creations. From His signs are the
ِِ ِ
night, day, sun and moon. Also from هتاَقوُلْ مَُ نْ موَ رُمَقَْلاوَ سُ مْشَّ لاوَ رُاهَ َّنلاوَ
His creations are the seven heavens, نْ مَوَ عُ ِْسَّ لا نَوضُ رَ َلأاوَ عُِْسَّ لا تُ اوَامَسَّ لا
the seven earths, all those within
them and whatever is between them.’ امَهُ َن يَْ ب امَوَ نَّهِيِف

ِ
The proof is the saying of Allah, the لََاعَ َت ُهُلوْ َق ُليلدَّلاوَ
Most High:
سمشَّ لاو راه َّنلاو ليَّللا هِِتيَآ نمِو{
{And from His signs are the night ُ ْ ى ُ ى ى ُ ْ ى ْ ى
amnodo nth. eD doa nyo, ta pnrdo tshtrea stuen t oa nthde t hsuen , رِ مىقىلِْل ىلاوى سِ مْشَّ لِل اودُجُ سْ ىت ىلا رُمىقىْلاوى
nor the moon, but prostrate to ُهيََِّإ مُْتن كُ نِإ نَّ هُقىىلخى يذَِّلا ََِِّ اودُجُ ْ اوى
Allah who created them, if you
truly worship Him} [41:37] }نىودُُبعْ ىت
