Originality in Aromatherapy
• In a field like aromatherapy where do we see opportunity for
originality?
• How can originality be maintained when so many of the same topics
and theories are discussed, taught, and written about on different
platforms?
• What are the pressures undermining originality?
• Why is it important to maintain originality in the aromatherapy
field?

Why is Originality Important?
• “Originality in the PhD is a subjective concept and is not the only
consideration for examiners. Of comparable importance is the
assessment of the student’s ability to demonstrate independence of
thought and increasing maturity so they can become independent
researchers” (Edwards, 2014).
• When originality is maintained in other types of work the same
abilities are cultivated.
• Applied to the roles in the aromatherapy field, these skills are
imperative.

Strategies for Originality
• Presenting a new piece of information
• Creating a new synthesis on a topic
• Bringing forward a new method, technique, application, result, or insight
on a previous topic
• Applying a cross-disciplinary approach to a topic that has not been used
before
• Using an established technique and applying it in a new area
• Examining an area in a field that has not previously been researched
• Testing a theory or previously published information to present a new
perspective

Academic Integrity
• Academic integrity is based on the premise of open and honest
pursuit of learning, avoiding plagiarism and cheating, upholding
academic standards, and research standards. Higher education
institutions make clear their guidelines for academic integrity and
the consequences of violating them.
• Not only does academic integrity ensure that the student enrolled in
the program is receiving their education, it teaches the invaluable
skills needed to cultivate originality.

Why Teaching Academic Integrity is
Important
• Understanding the concept of originality and its value has to be
learned.
• Teaching students how to think independently, critically, and
creatively generates confidence and empowerment.
• Demonstrating correct ways of using and building on the work
previously done by other contributors creates best practice standards
and habits for students to carry forward into their professional work.
• Students integrate learning, creating, and communicating effectively
with maintaining originality.
