Notes on contributors
Agnes Atim is an HIV care practitioner, activist and researcher.
Agnes received her doctorate from the University of Reading, UK,
and developed her current interest in the overlap between care, gender
and conflict in the context of HIV as themes in research, policy and
practice. She founded an international development and research
organisation with a primary focus on care.
Marian Barnes is Emeritus Professor of Social Policy at the University
of Brighton, UK. She previously held a chair in social research at the
University of Birmingham and has also worked at the universities
of Leeds and Sheffield. She is well known for her research in user
involvement and user movements, public participation, citizenship
and new forms of democratic practice. In the last few years her work
has focused on the ethics of care, ageing and well-being. Her many
publications include: Power, Participation and Political Renewal (Policy
Press, with Janet Newman and Helen Sullivan); Caring and Social Justice
(Palgrave); and Care in Everyday Life (Policy Press).
Amohia Boulton (Ngāti Ranginui, Ngai te Rangi, Ngāti Mutunga)
is the Research Director at Whakauae Research for Māori Health
and Development, a tribally owned and mandated research centre
located in Whanganui, New Zealand. As a health services researcher
Dr Boulton is concerned with the interface between national policies,
planning practices and funding strategies for indigenous health services
and the desires of local, indigenous communities for improving the
health outcomes of their people. These interests have led to research
and evaluation projects in traditional medicine, mental health, primary
healthcare, public health and community-based health promotion.
Vivienne Bozalek has a PhD from Utrecht University. She is a
professor of Social Work and the Director of Teaching and Learning at
the University of the Western Cape, South Africa. Her areas of research
and publications include the use of social justice and the political ethics
of care perspectives, critical family studies, innovative pedagogical
approaches in higher education, and feminist and participatory research
methodologies. She has co-edited three books: Community, Self and
Identity: Educating South African Students for Citizenship; Discerning
Hope in Educational Practices; and Activity Theory, Authentic Learning and
Emerging Technologies: Towards a Transformative Higher Education Pedagogy.

Notes on contributors
Tula Brannelly is a senior research fellow at the University of Surrey,
UK, researching care, ethics and marginalised groups. Her research
interests, developed while working in Aotearoa/New Zealand,
include how care is shaped by political and structural influences and
experienced by people who receive care, including the impacts of
colonisation. Tula has a practice background in mental health and with
older people. Her publications focus on the experience of care using
an ethic of care analysis.
Diego de Merich is a teaching fellow at the London School of
Economics and a Research Associate at the Institute for Intersectionality
Research and Policy at Simon Fraser University, Canada. Researching
in the areas of political theory, international development, deliberative
democracy and critical feminist theory, his work on care ethics bridges
recent findings on the neuroscience of human empathy with moral
sentimentalist readings of sympathy and ethics. By foregrounding
notions of empathy, empathic understanding, care and caring practices,
his work seeks to highlight lacunae in traditional rights-based theories.
In so doing, ‘central capabilities’ and practical ethics give way to the
practised ethics (of context and relationship) long advocated by care
theorists.
Ruth Evans is an associate professor in Human Geography at the
University of Reading, UK. Her research focuses on caring relations,
responses to death and gendered and intergenerational inequalities
in access to land and other resources. Her publications include a co-
authored book with Saul Becker, Children Caring for Parents/Relatives
with HIV/AIDS: Global Issues and Policy Responses (2009, Policy Press)
and articles on emotional interactions and an ethics of care in families
affected by HIV (with Felicity Thomas, Emotions, Space and Society,
2009) and on sibling caregiving in youth-headed households orphaned
by AIDS (Area, 2011; Geoforum, 2012; African Journal of AIDS Research,
2012).
Ann Fudge Schormans is an associate professor in the School of
Social Work at McMaster University (Hamilton, Ontario, Canada).
A practising social worker for many years, she worked with people
with intellectual disabilities (ID) in the community living and child
welfare sectors. Employing inclusive, co-researcher methodologies and
knowledge production, along with arts-informed methods, her current
research interests include an exploration of the use of city space by
people labelled ID; the intersection of ID with education, employment
