ThisbookanalysesthetheoryandpracticeoftheEuropean
Union’s‘ethicalforeignpolicy’,arguingthatcurrentpractices
dilutetheimpactandefficacyofEUpoliciesbutthataneffort
whichisattimeseffectiveisbeingmadetoprotectcertainvalues
intheUnion’sinternationalrelations.Beginningwithan
investigationoftheinternationalrulesauthorisingorobliging
theUnion/CommunityortheMemberStatestopromotecertain
valuesinthirdstatesortakeactiontoprotectthem,Khaliq
goesontoexaminethelimitsunderinternationallawwhich
constrainsuchpolicies.Theissuesarethenassessedfroman
EU/Communitylawperspective,andtheimportanceattachedto
ethicalvaluesandtheirrelationshipwithotherprioritiesand
objectivesisanalysedinthecontextofrelationswithMyanmar,
Nigeria,Pakistan,IsraelandthePalestinianAuthority.The
EuropeanCommunity’shumanitarianaidpolicyisalso
discussed.
