PREFACE
Procedures in the emergency department (and the hospital in general) are
frequent and varied. They range from simple suturing to complicated
thoracotomies. Procedures that are performed for the first few times or
infrequently are the ones that cause the most anxiety. The ability to review the
procedure quickly from a reliable source is clearly invaluable to a physician (and
the patient).
This procedure handbook is designed primarily for any physician, resident, or
medical student who will be doing emergency procedures. The aim of the book
is to have a bedside refresher of the key components of a procedure. This creates
accuracy, confidence, and, likely, fewer complications. There will be times when
you want to read an entire chapter to fully grasp every detail, and there will be
times when you want just the critical information. This book was designed to
meet both needs.
In keeping with the times, the highlights of this second edition include an
interactive e-book, more critical care procedures, and a dedicated section on
safety/quality that focuses on both procedural and cognitive pearls in every
chapter. The readers will find wonderful pearls that will not only change practice
but improve patient care.
Key chapters that are worth reviewing and very unlikely to be found in other
procedure books are Delayed Sequence Intubation, No DESAT, Induction of
Therapeutic Hypothermia, Occipital Nerve Block, and Open Joint
Evaluation/Methylene Blue Injection.
