This conference proceedings of off-campus library services
includes 30 papers covering the following topics: extracting the hidden
potential of course syllabi; obstacles to user education for off-campus
students; using Hypercard in an off-campus library environment; satisfying
accreditation requirements in lean times; the library's role in franchising
higher education; costing of off-campus library services; off-campus
students' perceptions of the effectiveness of library user education; linking
Indiana citizens to libraries; cooperative planning for service and
instruction; responding to accreditation associations' concerns about
an
external degree program; taking the technology to remote classrooms; using
technology to provide library services for a branch campus in Europe;
distance education and the virtual library; faculty perceptions of off-campus

PREFACE
The Off-Campus Library Services Conference held in Kansas City, Missouri was the sixth such
conference sponsored by Central Michigan Unviersity Libraries and the Extended Degree Programs.
Since 1982 when the first conference was held, Off-Campus Library Services Conferences have provided
gather to
a forum where practitioners involved with library services for off-campus constituents could
exchange relevant ideas, concerns, and perspectives; and to share research. Topics included the use of
technology, faculty perceptions, accreditation issues, external relations/networks, library user education,
academic su pport, the virtu al library, acquisitions, program start-up, international program management,
and fee-based service.
All papers included in the Conference Proceedings were selected through a juried abstracts process
involving Program Advisory Board members. The papers appearing in the Proceedings were accepted
as received from their authors. No editing was done for content or writing style. The papers were,
however, reformatted using the Chicago Manual of Sytle, Thirteenth Edition to achieve a consistency of
presentation.
It is the belief of all those involved with the Sixth Off-Campus Library Services Conference that this
edition of the Conference Proceedings will become a significant part of the growing body of literature in
the field of off-campus library services.

A great amount of hard work and long hours have gone into the production of the Sixth Off-Campus
Library Services Conference Proceedings and there are many people who deserve recognition for the
contributions they made to this project.
Thanks to Anne Marie Casey, Conference Planning Chair, and to the members of the Program Advisory
Board and the Executive Planning Committee who gave generously of their time and expertise in
reviewing the papers that form the basis of this volume.

myriad of details that made 31 different papers a unified publication.
