ПРЕДИСЛОВИЕ
ENGLISH FOR SENIOR STUDENTS – учебник,
предназначенный для студентов старших курсов Института
социологии и регионоведения, а также для студентов,
продолжающих изучение английского языка. Основной целью
учебника является развитие и совершенствование у студентов
навыков чтения текстов на английском языке. Поскольку при
системе двуязычного обучения английскому языку одним из
основных умений, формируемых у студентов, остаѐтся
перевод, то часть учебных материалов пособия направлена
также на формирование навыков перевода с английского
языка на русский и обратно.
Основу учебника составляют оригинальные тексты
тематического содержания, подобранные из аутентичных
источников.
Учебник состоит из 4 тематических разделов. В каждом
разделе есть задания, которые могут успешно применяться
при обучении студентов с разным уровнем знаний. Многие
упражнения нацелены на отработку навыков устной
и письменной речи, навыков владения всеми видами чтения
разных функциональных стилей. Во всех разделах средством
итогового контроля служат письменные задания, направ-
ленные на отработку и закрепление языковых навыков и
умений, представленных в данном разделе.
Данные упражнения могут выполняться в качестве
домашнего задания с последующей обязательной проверкой
в аудитории. Проверка этого задания является одним из
эффективных способов контроля, поскольку она позволяет
подробно разобрать все ошибки, выявить их причины,
определить удачные и неудачные варианты перевода.
Учебник также содержит грамматические разделы:

«Сослагательное наклонение» (условные типы предложений),
«Модальные глаголы»; справочный материал; коммуника-
тивные задания, направленные на отработку навыков
корректного применения коммуникативных моделей в рамках
практических занятий.
Данный учебник можно использовать в процессе обучения
не только под руководством преподавателя, но и при органи-
зации самостоятельной работы студентов.

aspiration n. A hope or ambition of achieving

transcend v. To be or go beyond the range or limits of
a field of activity or conceptual sphere

party politics.
ancestor n. 1. A person, typically one more remote
than a grandparent, from whom
one is descended e.g. He could trace his
ancestors back to James the First.
2. An early type of animal or plant from
which others have evolved from
e.g. the ancestor of most dolphins is not

elite adj. Of high birth or social position,

humanity n. 1. Mankind, human beings as a group. 2.

signify v. 1. To give (something) a meaning or an
importance.

empower v. 1. To give permission, power, or the
legal right to do something e.g. this act

quotation n. 1. A fragment of a human expression that
is repeated exactly by somebody else

cadre n. 1. The framework or skeleton upon
