Dr. John Baugh, Director of African and Afro-American Studies;
Departments of Psychology, Anthropology, Education, and English,
Washington University in St. Louis, USA. Known for educational
and social applications of linguistic science, Dr. Baugh taught for
14 years at Stanford University before becoming the inaugural holder
of an endowed professorship. While at Stanford, Dr. Baugh was
Director of the Stanford Teacher Education Program from 1994–1996,
and he received Stanford University’s St Clair Drake Teaching Award in
1999–2000. He was the president of the American Dialect Society from
1992–1994, and has served on advisory committees for collegiate dic-
tionaries. His most recent books include Beyond Ebonics: Linguistic
Pride and Racial Prejudice (2000), and Out of the Mouths of Slaves:
African American Language and Educational Malpractice(1999).
Dr. Cynthia Goldin Bernstein, Department of English, University
of Memphis, USA. Dr. Bernstein taught for ten years at Auburn
University, where she co-organized the second decennial symposium
on Language Variety in the South, and coedited the resulting volume
Language Variety in the South Revisited(1997). She currently teaches
in a new Ph.D. program in language study. Dr. Bernstein’s research
interests include the study of dialect variation, methods of gathering
and interpreting linguistic data, and the use of linguistic tools to ana-
lyze literary and popular genres. She is a past president of the
Southeastern Conference on Linguistics. Her publications include
The Text and Beyond: Essays in Literary Linguistics(edited, 1994).
Dr. Janina Brutt-Griffler, Department of Learning and Instruction,
State University of New York at Buffalo, USA. Prior to assuming her
current position, Dr. Brutt-Griffler taught on the graduate faculty at
the University of York, England. At the time of the symposium from
which the current volume is drawn, she was an Associate Professor in
the Department of English at the University of Alabama. She is the
author of World English: A Study of Its Development(2002), winner of
the Modern Language Association’s 2004 Kenneth W. Mildenberger

Prize. Her other publications include Bilingualism and Language
Pedagogy (coedited 2004). She serves on the Executive Committee
for General Linguistics of the Modern Language Association and the
Distinguished Service and Scholarship Committee of the American
Association for Applied Linguistics.
Dr. A. Suresh Canagarajah, Department of English, Baruch
College, City University of New York, USA. Dr. Canagarajah’s
research interests span bilingualism, discourse analysis, academic writ-
ing, postcolonial literature, and critical language pedagogy. His book,
Resisting Linguistic Imperialism in English Teaching (1999), was
awarded the Mina P. Shaughnessy Award (2000) by the Modern
Language Association for the best “research publication in the field of
teaching English language, literature, rhetoric, and composition.” He
has most recently edited a collection of articles by international schol-
ars on responses to globalization in Reclaiming the Local in Language
Policy and Practice (2005). He serves currently as editor of the
TESOL Quarterly, the flagship journal of the international association
for applied linguists.
Dr. Nikolas Coupland, Professor and Director of the Cardiff Centre
for Language and Communication Research, University of Cardiff,
Wales, United Kingdom. Dr. Coupland is the founding editor (with
Allan Bell) of the Journal of Sociolinguistics. His primary areas of
research include sociolinguistics and sociolinguistic theory, style
variation in spoken language, the sociolinguistics of Wales, critical
discourse analysis, and lifespan communication. He currently directs
the Centre’s project on Welsh language and Welsh identity under
globalisation. His books include: Researching Language Attitudes:
Social Meanings of Dialect, Ethnicity and Performance(coedited, 2003),
Sociolinguistics and Social Theory (coedited, 2001), Discourse and
Lifespan Identity (1993, with Jon Nussbaum), Language: Contexts
and Consequences (1991, with Howard Giles), English in Wales
(1990), and Dialect in Use: Sociolinguistic Variation in Cardiff
English(1988).
Dr. Catherine Evans Davies, Department of English, University of
Alabama USA. At the time of the symposium from which the current
volume is drawn, Dr. Davies was director of the graduate linguistics
programs in the English Department at the University of Alabama.
Her work on cross-cultural interaction has appeared in World
Englishes, Text, Multilingua, the Journal of Pragmatics, and elsewhere.
She served as president of the Southeastern Conference on Linguistics
Contributors ix
in 2003–2004. With Michael D. Picone she was co-organizer of the
NSF-funded decennial symposium on “Language variety in the south
historical and contemporary perspectives,” in 2004, and is currently
coediting the resulting volume under an NEH grant.
Dr. Marcia Farr, Departments of Education and English, Ohio State
University; Professor Emerita of English and Linguistics, University
of Illinois at Chicago, USA. As a sociolinguist, Dr. Farr focuses on
cultural variation in the use of oral and written language and the ways
this affects teaching and learning. Her current research is a long-term
ethnographic study of culture, language and identity among a
transnational social network of Mexican families in Chicago and their
village-of-origin in Michoacan, Mexico. She has edited two volumes
on this topic Ethnolinguistic Chicago: Language and Literacy in the
City’s Neighborhoods (2004), and Latino Language and Literacy in
Ethnolinguistic Chicago(2005). She has a forthcoming edited volume
entitled Rancheros in Chicagoacán: Ways of Speaking and Identity in a
Mexican Transnational Community.
Dr. Yunte Huang, Department of English, University of California at
Santa Barbara, USA. Dr. Huang received his B.A. from Peking
University; his M.A. from the University of Alabama; and his Ph.D.
from SUNY-Buffalo. After teaching at Harvard University, Dr. Huang
became director of the Consortium for Literature, Theory, and Culture
at UC Santa Barbara. His publications include: Transpacific
Displacement: Ethnography, Translation, and Intertextual Travel in
Twentieth-Century American Literature (2002); Shi: A Radical
Reading of Chinese Poetry(1997), Selected Language Poems(1993), and
a translation into Chinese of Ezra Pound’s The Pisan Cantos. Both a
scholar and a poet, Dr. Huang is an affiliated faculty member of UCSB’s
interdisciplinary American Cultures and Global Contexts Center.
Dr. Alamin A. Mazrui, Department of African-American and African
Studies, Ohio State University, USA. Dr. Mazrui has taught at
universities in Kenya and Nigeria, and has served as a consultant to
nongovernmental organizations in Africa on language and urbaniza-
tion, and language and the rule of law. His latest publications include,
English in Africa: After the Cold War (2004), and Power of Babel:
Language and Governance in the African Experience(1998), coauthored
with Ali A. Mazrui. Dr. Mazrui is a published playwright and poet in
Kiswahili.
Professor Simon J. Ortiz, Department of English, University of
Toronto, Canada. Professor Ortiz is a member of Acoma Pueblo in
