Preface
Engineering Analytics is beginning to consolidate as a set of mandatory tools to
learn and obtain vast benefits. Engineering Analytics results from a convergence of
advances that have motivated a tsunami of applications and successes. Computing
has evolved and continues to grow in capacity and speed, and Artificial Intelligence
models and Big Data are already maturing, along with advanced statistics, simula-
tion, and operations research.
This book is very innovative and delivers the portfolio of techniques and areas
that make up Engineering Analytics, but at the same time, describes a diversified
set of sophisticated applications. It provides a perspective on Engineering Analytics
and its applications from the descriptive, the visual, the predictive, and the prescrip-
tive. The areas covered in these selected articles include a wide range of applications
from the supply chain to the Internet of Things. Techniques include neural networks,
Deep Learning, mixed-i nteger programming, hybrid simulation, and stochastic
optimization.
SYNOPSIS OF ENGINEERING ANALYTICS
Beginning with a methodological framework, authors Janjevic and Winkenbach in
Chapter 1 explore the role of interactive visualization and human-i n- the- loop opti-
mization to improve human decision making in the context of supply chain design.
The authors elaborate a framework allowing the conceptualization of group decision
making in data-d riven design solutions that are better capable of responding to many
companies’ real-l ife supply chain challenges.
Chapters 2, 3, and 4 cover descriptive and visual analytics. In Chapter 2, authors
Clavijo-B uritica, Abushaega, González, Amorim, and Polo present an analysis based
on unsupervised learning to find associations and uncovered structures from data
of road closures in Colombia. The descriptive study identifies the vulnerable areas
and measures the effects of such disruptions on Colombia’s performance when the
materials’ flows are restricted due to landslides or road maintenances. In Chapter 3,
authors Prato, Rodriguez, Martínez, Sarmiento, and Talero use Colombia’s National
Registry of Cargo Dispatches to present a comprehensive study of the need for
analytics in order to promote connectivity with transportation networks and foreign
trade nodes in Latin America. Analytics will facilitate the development of strategies
to improve the logistic capacities for freight transportation.
In the twenty-fi rst century, organizations have increased their expertise in cap-
turing, collecting, and storing data from their customers, operations, employees, and
competitors. However, having data is not enough. In Chapter 4, the author Torres
deals with this issue, stating that data is essential, and the recent developments in
analytics can support the utilization to gain a competitive advantage.
Chapters 5 to 10 concern predictive analytics. Using Blockchain as one example of
new technology where there are no clear guidelines to assess its benefits in complex
