Preface to the Second Edition
Nearly10yearsago,SpringerpublishedthefirsteditionoftheEncyclopedic
ReferenceofImmunotoxicology.Thefirstedition’ssuccessisattributedtoa
greatnumberofgoodfriendsandcolleaguesallovertheworld,whowrotethe
entriesandsupportedthework,theEditorialBoardandlastbutcertainlynot
least, the dedicated people at Springer. Numerous problems, questions and
misunderstandingsweresolvedwithpatienceandcompetence.
Immunotoxicology is arelatively young field of toxicology and is there-
fore relatively dynamic. Although the immunological basis for
immunotoxicology has remained largely unchanged, several major new
developments in methodology and guidelines prompted Springer to request
anupdateofthefirstedition.Duetothehighnumberofchangesintroducedin
thesecondeditionandthehighworkloadexperiencedbythevariouscontrib-
utors we faced difficulty at times with respect to updating each and every
entry. However, with the dedication and passion of the Editorial Board, we
managed to release this version. In all, 20 new entries were introduced and
over75%ofentrieswereupdated.Aspecialthankstoalltheindividualsthat
tookalargeamountoftheirtimetosupportthesechanges:LeighAnn,Bob,
Henk,Jacques,Jo¨rg,andPeter.
With great regret I had to take note of the death of dear friends and
distinguished colleagues who provided very valuable and much-noted con-
tributions to the first edition. In memory of these colleagues we decided to
leavetheirentriesastheyareforthissecondeditionwithonlyminoreditorial
changes.
Finally, I want to give sincere thanks to all the authors for their new
contributions and updates to existing entries. In addition to all the folks
from Springer who were involved in preparing the second edition, I would
like tothank MauricioQuinones and Andrew Spencer, who played amajor
roleinthesuccessofthefirstedition,andwereverysupportiveinpreparation
ofthecurrentedition.
Withoutthesupport,enthusiasmandpatienceofallthepeoplementioned
here, completion of the second edition would not have been possible. This

evolutionofthefieldofimmunotoxicology.
