VolkerThielisProfessorofOrganicGeochemistryintheGeoscienceCenterattheUniversityofGöttingen,Germany.Dr.Thielhasbeeninvolved
ingeobiologicalresearchforsome15years,withafocusontheuseoforganicmoleculesaschemicaltracers(biomarkers)forbiogeochemicalpath-
ways.Hisresearchinterestsincludelipidbiomarkersasindicatorsforbiogeochemicalprocesses,molecularfossils,biologicalformation,andturn-
over of methane, and microbial control on mineral formation. The results of his studies have significantly contributed to the characterization
ofmicrobialprocessesassociatedwithmethaneturnoverinmodernandancientenvironments.MuchofDr.Thiel’scurrentworkisdevotedto
newapproachestoenhancethespatialresolutionofbiomarkeranalysisingeobiologicalsystems.HeismemberoftheEditorialBoardofthejournal
