This dissertation examines the emotional effects of curvilinear versus rectilinear architectural forms through qualitative interviews with 12 signature architects known for their use of curvilinear designs and quantitative surveys of 305 students rating modified interior views with varying curvature. The qualitative interviews explored why signature architects apply curvature and their design processes. Quantitative surveys had participants rate views on emotional variables like pleasantness as curvature increased. Results showed non-architects had more positive responses to curvature, finding it pleasant and stress-reducing, while both groups associated curvature most with femininity. The dissertation discusses factors distinguishing signature architects, their design methods, how and why designers use curvature, and emotional differences between designer and non-designer ratings of curvature.
