Code Description
PROGRAM ABSTRACT
1. Name of Program
The program described in this abstract is to be formally known as
ELESTRES.XXX where XXX stands for the version of the program. The current
version is M11K.
2. Computer for Which Program is Designed
The program is specifically designed for use on the CDC6600/CYB 875 or
CYB960 computer at KAERI, Daeduk, Daejeon, Korea.
3. Nature of the Physical Problem Solved
ELESTRES is a fuel performance code designed to predict the behaviour of
a CANDU fuel element for a given power history under normal operating condi
tions. It contains one dimensional models of heat generation, temperature
distribution, fission gas release and fuel-to-sheath heat transfer. A two
dimensional axisymmetric stress analysis of the fuel pellet is used in con
junction with a one dimensional analysis for the sheath to compute the strains
on the pellet and sheath.
4. Method of Solution
The program calculates a one dimensional temperature distribution
inside the fuel pellet using a simple finite difference scheme. The two
dimensional axisymmetric, elastic plastic stress-strain analysis is performed
using the finite element method. Consistent with most nonlinear finite
element analyses, the incremental approach is taken to account for the non
linear thermal and mechanical behaviour of the pellet and sheath.
5. Restrictions on The Complexity of the Problem
The number of finite difference grid points and the number of finite
elements used in the program are fixed for a given pellet geometry. The user
may use up to a maximum of 199 pairs of burnup-l inear power values to describe
a power history to which the fuel is subjected.
6. Typical Running Time
The program takes typically 12 seconds on the CDC 6600/CYB 875 computer
to compile and 4 to 6 seconds to execute one history point. The running
time is increased if large fluctuations in power are present in the power
history.
7. Unusual Features of The Program
ELESTRES is designed to predict the behaviour of CANDU fuel under normal
operating conditions. It can be used as a fast and inexpensive tool to aid
fuel design. Where considerable computation efficiency can be gained,
the less mathematically rigorous and approximate approaches are taken. The
acceptability of these approximations is then verified by comparison of pre
dictions with experimental results.
8. Related and Auxiliary Programs
ELESTRES was developed by modifying ELESIM2 (a one dimensional stress in
dependent fuel performance code) and SAFE (a two dimensional axisymmetric
stress analysis finite element code). It can be used to generate the initial
conditions for analyses using another code ELOCA - a one dimensional code for
the simulation of fuel behaviour under transient conditions.

The initial date of publication of this abstract is November 1992.

11. Machine Requirements
ELESTRES requires approximately 130,000 words of central memory. It
accepts inputs from card decks and provides outputs on line printers. It
also writes onto a disk file the initial conditions for ELOCA.
12. Programming Language Used
FORTRAN is used throughout the program.
13. Operating System under Which Frogram is Executed
ELESTRES is currently executed under the Control Data Corporation(CDC)
Network Operating System/Batch Environment(NOS/BE) Version 1.3 Operating
System.
14. Other Programming or Operating Information or Restrictions
ELESTRES is written in standard FORTRAN, hence one should be able to ex
ecute ELESTRES on any operating system or computer which supports the FORTRAN
language with a minimal amount of changes,
15. Name and Establishment of Authors
The initial computer version of ELESTRES was developed by Clendening, W.
R. and Jones, L. R. at Westinghouse Canada Limited. The second version of
ELESTRES was developed by Wong. H. H., Alp, E., and Pindera, M-Z. at
Westinghouse Canada Limited, Atomic Power Division, BR-3, Hamilton, Ontario.
The current version of ELESTRES.MllK was developed at KAERI, PHWR Fuel Devel.
Department.
16. Material Available
The UPDATE(source deck) version of ELESTRES.MllK may be obtained by
us ing ATTACH(ELESTR).
