This volume is the product of the Third Taniguchi International Symposium
on the Theory of Condensed Matter, which was held at the Fuji Institute of
Education and Training in Susono-shi (at the foot of Mt. Fuji) in Japan
during the period of 1-5 November 1980. The topic of the Symposium was
"Electron Correlation and Magnetism in Narrow-Band Systems", one of the cen
tral issues in present-day condensed-matter physics. Special emphases were
put on the ferro- and anti ferromagnetism of transition metals, alloys and
compounds - in particular, various approaches toward resolution of the long
standing controversy between itenerant versus localized pictures-and on
the valence fluctuations in rare-earth compounds.
In the former area marked progress has been made in recent years owing
to investigations of spin fluctuations from a very general point of view,
as discussed by many contributors in Part I of this volume. Although there
are still controversies as to the relative importance of the short-range
order, etc. in each specific substance such as iron or nickel, and although
the studies of dynamical effects are far from satisfactory, I believe that
we are now on a promising track. Part II deals with the ground-state proper
ties of d metals and alloys, including the possible importance of the many
body effects in nickel and its alloys and the importance of the antisymme
tric exchange interaction as an origin of the long-period helical spin struc
ture in certain metallic compounds. Various theoretical aspects of the nar
row-band problems such as spin glasses, low dimensionality, and some exact
results for simplified models are discussed in Part III. The problem of
mixed valence in 4f compounds is a relatively new and hardly settled subject,
where the effects of electron correlation are expected to be stronger than
in transition metals and the many-body effect seems to be essential even in
the ground state. Some of the fundamental problems in this area, as viewed
from the standpoint of narrow-band theory, are discussed by several contri
butors in Part IV.
A limited number of active researchers were invited to participate in the
Taniguchi Symposium in line with the philosophy and policy of the Taniguchi
Foundation as described in Mr~ Taniguchi's speech delivered at the reception,
which may be found in the Foreword. Although this set up was useful in order
to facilitate intense communication among the participants, we feel obliged
to share the information obtained in the symposium with scientists through
out the world. We are therefore grateful to Springer-Verlag for their assist
ance in reaching this goal.

Finally, on behalf of the participants, I would like to dedicate this
volume to the memory of Dr. John Hubbard, who passed away shortly after the
Symposium. We are indebted to him for invaluable contributions to the sym
posium both in his enlightening talks and very stimulating discussions, not
to mention his outstanding contributions in the field of narrow-band problems
in the course of his brilliant career.

Foreword
Speech by Toyosaburo Taniguchi
Welcome my friends to the Third International Symposium, Division on the
Theory of Condensed Matter, of the Taniguchi Foundation.
The need is now greater than ever for Japan to consider how to strengthen
and foster international understanding between nations, peoples and societies,
and how to contribute towards the establishment of peace and prosperity in
the world.
For more than twenty years, I have been supporting a symposium on mathe
matics in which distinguished scholars from allover the world have engaged
in free discussions. In this symposium, all the participants live together
in community style. I have heard from members of some of these study groups
that this type of setup has helped to strengthen their ties and relationships
with their colleagues on a personal basis. What developed in the mathematics
group led me to reorganize and strengthen the Taniguchi Foundation only a
few years ago through additional funding.
In order to effectively translate the objectives of the Foundation into
action with the funds available, it becomes necessary to select those fields
which are not necessarily in the limelight of popular interest, which means
those fields which, I am afraid, are low in funding. I would rather choose
for the Foundation, projects from modest unimpressive academic fields than
those that stand out in gaudy, gorgeous popular acclaim.
I would desire to see the promising younger groups of scholars throughout
the world assume an even more active role in our symposia. With world-shaking
events occurring daily, deep-rooted changes are taking place. It is really
the younder generation who will lead us into the promise of tomorrow. Their
experiences in the symposia will be instrumental in forging the bonds of
mutual understanding between peoples, between societies and between nations.
I would like to add.,that the number of the participants is being prefer
ably limited to about 15 or 20 - and no more - because of my desire to see
a situation of living and studying together in a close-knit community setup.
The more the number of participants increases, the more the substance of the
symposium becomes vague and the perfume is gone; therefore I beg your best
understanding of our basic philosophies and thoughts.
Today the Foundation extends its activities to nearly ten divisions. In
addition to the Theory of Condensed Matter, we hold symposia in Mathematics,
Business History, Biophysics, Medical History, Brain Sciences, Ethnology and
Neurobiology in Vision. Whenever I meet with the many distinguished scholars

participating in our symposia, I am impressed by their hones dedication to
their mission of pursuing the vocation they are in. Words are simply inade
quate to express my sincere respect for these unselfish and dedicated efforts
of theirs, which cannot help but make a major contribution to the well-being
of mankind. It is my hope that these symposia will continue for ten years or
more under the guidance of Mr. H. Shima, President of the Foundation, who
designed and brought to completion the "Shin-Kansen", the world-famous bul
let train of Japan.
Kyoto, the 1200-year-old capital of Japan, is widely known as a veritable
treasure house of cultural and historical interest in Japan. It is in truth
a city sitting in a nest of great natural beauty. You might be interested to
know that three out of five Japanese Nobel Laureates, Dr. Hideki Yukawa,
Dr. Leona Esaki and the late Dr. Shin-ichiro Tomonaga, lived in this beauti
ful environment during their student days. They schooled in the same insti
tution located here in Kyoto. While I realize that your time in the Kyoto
area is limited, I hope that you will be enjoying yourself as they did in
their youth since there should be a meeting of the hearts and of experiences
common to all the scholastic minded.
In conclusion, I would like to end these words of welcome with an earnest
prayer for the success of the symposium throughout all sessions, and also
sincerely hope that all the participants, both Japanese and foreign, will
return, bearing heartwarming memories of the symposium and our enjoyable
time together this evening.
