Josep M. Espinas nació en Barcelona, en 1927. Licenciado en Derecho. Desde muy joven su vocación le llevó a la literatura: en 1949 ganó un concurso periodístico y en 1953 el premio “Joanot Martorell” de novela catalana, con su obra “Com ganivets o flames”. A continuación ha ido publicando varias novelas, relatos y libros de viajes. “El último rellano”, es la tercera novela de Espinas que se traduce al castellano, pues sigue a “Todos somos iguales” —publicada también con gran éxito en Estados Unidos y Alemania— y a “Combate en la noche”, que centra su acción en el dramático mundo de los camioneros y la carretera. «El último rellano» es la extraordinaria novela que obtuvo el Premio Sant Jordi 1961. Una familia obrera, dos jóvenes pintores y una pareja de vida irregular —inquilinos de los tres estudios de un ático— son los protagonistas de esta inolvidable historia, retrato insuperable de unas gentes de hoy, de sus estilos de vida, sus preocupaciones y despreocupaciones, esperanzas y desesperanzas.
