El sastre de Ulm ofrece una original e iluminadora interpretación historiográfica del mayor partido comunista de Occidente, el italiano, al tiempo que pone de manifiesto las esperanzas políticas y la talla intelectual de un militante herético. Estuvo entre los fundadores, en 1969, de il manifesto del que fue también director. Expulsado del PCI en 1970, pasó a ser secretario del PDUP (Partido de la Unidad Proletaria) de 1976 a 1984. Al producirse la convergencia del PDUP hacia el PCI sobre la base del profundo giro impuesto por Berlinguer, Magri fue llamado de nuevo a la dirección del PCI. Posteriormente, Magri fue el primero en oponerse a la propuesta de disolución, y fue uno de los organizadores de un amplio frente del NO. Después de la escisión y formación de Rifondazione comunista, aceptó presidir su grupo parlamentario, pero dimitió al constatar que al nuevo partido carecía de una voluntad auténtica para establecer una verdadera refundación, y gradualmente fue renunciando a la política activa. Del 2000 al 2005 ha dirigido la rivista del manifesto, suplemento mensual del periódico.
