SUMMARY

The present doctoral thesis studies the discourse of Christian apologetic
literature on paganism from the second century AD to the reign of Constantine. In
the strict meaning of the term, apologetic literature is not a “genre”, as the works
traditionally regarded as apologetic differ widely in the type of discourse, the topics,
the literary forms, context and audience. Nonetheless, despite these differences, they
all shared the same intention, which was to defend Christianity. This type of
literature was a response to the persecutions, in an attempt to answer the accusations
made against Christians by magistrates, intellectuals and the public. However,
defence was not the only objective of the apologists, as their arguments served to
construct the identity of Christianity itself, and define the boundaries between it and
other religious systems in the Greco-Roman world, as regarding beliefs, rites and
ethical and social behaviour. In this thesis, we interpret apologetic literature in the
widest sense of the term and study those works that present and defend Christianity
within a real or potential context of persecution.

Second century apologists laid the foundations of the argumentation method,
which were consolidated in the third century and early fourth century. Anti-pagan
polemics were arranged around three main topics: 1) polytheism, of which they
criticised the deification of matter, men, elements of nature and zoolatry; 2) the
ethical behaviour of pagans, focusing on homicidal behaviour (anthropophagy,
human sacrifices, expositio and abortion) and sexual immorality (incest, adultery,
prostitution, homosexuality and castration), and 3) civic behaviour towards laws,
rulers, the army, taxation and spectacles.
The argumentation model followed a rhetorical strategy, whose main instrument was
the retorsio argumentorum, which involved projecting the accusations they received
against their accusers. Together with retorsio, the apologists resorted to other typical
persuasion strategies of classical rhetoric, which they adapted to their own purposes.
The image of paganism given by the apologists is a stereotype, and rarely can
elements of contemporary experience be extracted from their texts. Therefore, this
thesis does not attempt to examine the situation of paganism between the second and
fourth centuries, but analyses the argumentative strategies, the rhetorical tools, and
ultimately, the ideas the apologists crafted about Greco-Roman paganism. This topic
has not previously been approached systematically in a study embracing all the
treatises traditionally included within the category of pre-Constantinian apologetic
literature. The present doctoral thesis aims to fill this historiographical lacuna.
