En 1800, por inútil y por haber colgado los hábitos, Bernardo fue desterrado de su Galicia paterna a un lugar de la tierra mal hecho o sin terminar : Buenos Aires. En esa ciudad medio disuelta entre los ocres infinitos de la pampa y el Río de la Plata, Bernardo se transformó: primero se volvió un águila en el comercio y, cuando las Invasiones Inglesas de 1806 y 1807, surgió como un inesperado genio militar, el miliciano que acorraló y rindió a los comandantes Craufurd y Pack tras despedazar sus tropas calle por calle y casa por casa. El guerrero celta infuso en Bernardo brotó con brillo y ferocidad y le ganó fama y amor. El amor duró más que la fama. En 1810, cuando el Virreinato del Río de la Plata rompió con España, el infierno se abrió bajo los pies de Bernardo. Leal a su rey, huyó de Buenos Aires a Montevideo para combatir la revolución, pero cayó preso por envidias y calumnias de los propios popes contrarrevolucionarios. Y después para su familia empezó el periplo del dolor, pero del dolor en serio, el profundo, el que lo terminó matando.
