La vida del general Domingo Batet Mestres atraviesa toda la historia contemporánea de España, desde el desastre colonial del 98 hasta la guerra civil. Batet se nos presenta como un militar de honor, un competente profesional disciplinado y siempre sometido al poder civil. Al mismo tiempo, en esta biografía aparece dibujada, con nueva luz documental y como por contraste, la figura del general Franco. Como dice Paul Preston en el prólogo, «las ocasiones en que Batet y Franco entraron en contacto muestran lo mejor y lo peor de la tradición militar española». Franco detestaba a Batet por su lealtad con la República y por haber tratado valientemente de impedir el alzamiento en Burgos. Después de un proceso inicuo, lo hizo fusilar por «adhesión a la rebelión». Batet es un buen representante de aquella tercera España que, desde Unamuno o Alcalá Zamora hasta el cardenal Vidal i Barraquer, no cabía ni en la primera ni en la segunda. Esta obra lo reivindica del ostracismo histórico a que lo habían condenado tanto la historiografía catalanista, por haber sido fiel a la República española el 6 de octubre de 1934, como la franquista.
