Fray Luis de León es una de las figuras clave de la lírica española del siglo XVI. Estudiante y luego profesor de la Universidad de Salamanca, además de fraile agustino, nació en 1527 y murió en 1591. La mayor parte de su vida coincide con el reinado de Felipe II, con una España inmersa en la Contrarreforma y en el rígido control ideológico que supervisaba la Inquisición. La vigilancia de las fronteras, las inspecciones a las librerías y, finalmente, la elaboración del Índice de libros prohibidos no eran sino manifestación de una intolerancia que convirtió a fray Luis en sujeto de sospecha. Manuel Fernández Álvarez acude al clásico sistema del diálogo para exponer en esta obra (que llegó a ser nominada para el premio Nacional de Ensayo) los hitos más significativos de la vida de fray Luis: su juventud, su carrera universitaria, su ejercicio profesional y su obra, por la que fue encarcelado entre 1572 y 1576.
