En la madrugada del 6 de marzo de 1938, tuvo lugar en el Mediterráneo, frente a las costas del cabo de Palos, la mayor batalla naval de la guerra civil española, cuando tres cruceros nacionalistas que escoltaban un convoy procedente de Italia con rumbo a Cádiz, fueron interceptados por una escuadra republicana salida de la base naval de Cartagena. El enfrentamiento culminó con el hundimiento del crucero nacionalista Baleares, en el que un torpedo lanzado por el destructor Lepanto hizo estallar el pañol de municiones, con la subsiguiente pérdida de casi ochocientos oficiales y marineros de su dotación.En esta breve narración de la batalla y posterior hundimiento del crucero, el autor, marinero-artillero del Baleares, hace un relato impresionista y subjetivo del acontecimiento. Como él mismo afirma en la presentación, narra «lo que ví y oí», sin más pretensión que dar testimonio escrito de sus recuerdos cuando éstos, a los catorce años del suceso, aún se mantenían frescos en su memoria.
