Na de novelle volgen vijftien korte Egyptische verhalen, met personages die worstelen met frustraties in hun leven. 'Eigen Vuur' volgt na de succesvolle roman 'Het Yacoubian'. Daarna verscheen 'Chicago', ook weer een geslaagde roman.
