This thesis examines the effects of traditional versus electronic note taking in a high school biology classroom. The author conducted a study over 20 weeks where students took notes either using paper and pencil (traditional; n=58) or laptop computers (electronic; n=46). Both groups took identical pre- and post-tests for three units as well as a practice End of Course exam. The author found no significant difference in academic achievement between the two note taking groups based on normalized learning gains. However, a student survey found that both groups preferred traditional note taking.
