This meta-analysis examined the effect of game-based learning on K-12 students' mathematics achievement compared to traditional instruction. The analysis included 17 studies published between 2000-2014. Results showed heterogeneity in both the magnitude and direction of effects. Using a random-effects model, a small but marginally significant overall positive effect was found, suggesting game-based learning may contribute to higher gains than traditional methods. However, moderator analyses found the effect did not significantly vary based on type of assessment instrument or school level.
