ABSTRACT
The present investigation "effect of soil less culture on growth, yield and forskolin
content of coleus" was carried out at Sugandhavana, Medicinal and Aromatic Section,
Department of Horticulture, University of Agricultural Sciences, GKVK, Bangalore
(Zone- 5), during the year 2010-12.
Among the media and nutrients, the plants grown in cocopeat with 150 per cent of
Recommended Dose of Fertilizers (RDF) responded with high vegetative growth such as
plant height, number of leaves, plant spread, fresh and dry weight of shoot. Among the
different root parameters, root diameter, fresh and dry weight of roots and dry matter
accumulation was significantly higher in cocopeat media with 80 per cent RDF.
Significantly higher yield parameters, fresh and dry weight of roots (410 and 114 g
plant-1, respectively), yield per m2 and per hectare (1.71 kg m-2 and 17.10 t ha-1,
respectively) were recorded in M F (cocopeat with 80 % RDF). Forskolin content (1.00

%) and benefit cost ratio (4.25) was also found to be maximum in M F .

Further screening of coleus varieties/ mutants under cocopeat media and 80 per
cent of RDF resulted in maximum growth parameter values in the mutant, MV compared

to other varieties while significantly higher root length and diameter was noticed in MV

(41.83 and 2.52 cm, respectively). Maximum root to shoot dry weight ratio (3.12), dry
matter (148.14 g plant-1), fresh (356.63 g) and dry weight of roots per plant (112.14 g)
was observed in MV . The dry tuber yield was also found to be maximum (1.68 kg m-2

and 16.82 t ha-1) in MV compared to check variety K-8 (1.00 kg m-2and 9.99 t ha-1). The

forskolin content in tuberous roots of various coleus varieties was maximum (1.04 %) in
MV followed by MV (0.92 %). The study highlights the effect of cocopeat with 80 per

cent RDF to be the best fir commercial cultivation of coleus mutants (MV and MV ).
