Abstract
Intheaerospaceindustry,valuesassustainability andsocialimpacthavebecomenowadaysasrele-
vantastheproductdirectcost,demonstratingthecompanies’operationfootprint. Withinthisframework,
two main challenges - operational and environment costs - have a common root cause: fossilfuel con-
sumption. One way to address this is through aircraft weight reduction. In this regard, CFRPs, due
to their high strength to weight ratio, have found a growing presence in aerostructures. This increased
usehasbroughtnewchallengestotheindustry,namelythoseofpropertiesdegradationduringout-time
exposureaffectingthepre-impregnatedvarietyofcomposites(prepregs).
With the aim to improve resources usage regarding the use of prepregs in an industrial scenery,
the purpose of this project is to characterize prepreg material during out-time aging and propose an
optimizedsuitabletestingmethodologytoevaluateitinthiscondition. Thiswillbeaccomplishedthrough
evaluationofmechanical,physical-chemicalandprocessabilitytests.
Thetestingandspecimensproductionwereaddressedfollowingstandardizedmethodstoensuredata
reliability and repeatability. Epoxy impregnated prepreg samples were aged to a maximum of 60 days
and, with a periodicity of 6 days,they were submitted to tack, drape, solubility, flow, void, ILSS, tensile,
impact,CAIandDMAtests.
TheDMA and flowprovedto bethe mostadvantageous tests anda proposal foran optimized evalu-
ationmethodology wasmade. Although processability degradation wasnoticed, thematerial withstood
theagingwithminorchangesinotherproperties,raisingthepossibilityoffuturere-utilization.

Resumo
Na indústria aeroespacial, valores como a sustentabilidade e o impacto social tornaram-se hoje em
diatãorelevantescomoocustodiretodoproduto,demonstrandooimpactooperacionaldasempresas.
Nestecontexto, dois grandes desafios - custos operacionais e ambientais - têm uma causacomum: o
consumodecombustíveisfósseis. Ummododeabordaresteassuntoéreduzindoopesodaaeronave.
Nesteâmbito,osCFRPs,devidoaoseualtorácioresistência/peso,tornaram-sepresençacrescenteem
estruturas aeronáuticas. Este crescente uso trouxe à industria novos desafios, nomeadamente os da
degradação de propriedades durante a exposiçãoem out-time que afeta compósitos pré-impregnados
(prepregs).
Com o objetivo de melhorar a utilização de recursos em relação ao uso de pré-impregnados num
cenárioindustrial,esteprojetopretendecaracterizaromaterialpré-impregnadoduranteenvelhecimento
em out-time e propor uma metodologia de testes adequada para o avaliar nesta condição. Isto será
conseguidoatravésdeensaiosmecânicos,físico-químicosedeprocessabilidade.
Osensaioseproduçãodosprovetesforamrealizadosseguindométodospadronizadosgarantindoa
confiabilidade e repetibilidade dos dados. Amostras de prepreg impregnados com epoxy foram envel-
hecidasatéummáximode60diase,comumaperiodicidade de6dias,submetidas aensaiosdetack,
drape,solubilidade,fluxo,vazio,ILSS,tração,impacto,CAIeDMA.
Os ensaios de DMA e fluxo provaram ser os mais vantajosos e foi proposta uma metodologia de
avaliação otimizada. Embora tenha sido verificada degradação na processabilidade do material, este
resistiuaoenvelhecimentocompequenasalteraçõesnoutraspropriedades,levantandoapossibilidade
defuturareutilização.
