Zusammenfassung

Der Ni-Basis-Schweisszusatzwerkstoff Alloy 182 wird in Leichtwasserreaktoren sehr häufig
in Mischnahtverbindungen zwischen dem niedriglegiertem Reaktordruckbehälter und
Reaktoreinbauten und Rohrleitungen aus Ni-Basis-Legierungen (z.B. Alloy 600) oder
austenitisch rostfreien Stählen (z.B. AISI 304L, 316L, 316NG) verwendet. Während der
letzten Jahrzehnte sind mehrere Fälle von Spannungsrisskorrosion (SpRK) in Alloy 182
Mischnähten in Siedewasserreaktoren (SWR) und Druckwasserreaktoren (DWR) aufgetreten,
welche die Integrität des Primärkühlkreislaufes gefährdet haben.
Andere Forschungsarbeiten haben gezeigt, dass bei Nickelbasislegierungen unter DWR-
Bedingungen die Anfälligkeit gegenüber SpRK vom Wasserstoffgehalt abhängt. Ein
temperaturabhängiges Maximum der SpRK Risswachstumsraten wurde im Bereich des
Wasserstoffgehaltes beobachtet, der der thermodynamischen Ni/NiO Phasenumwandlungs-
linie im dazugehörigen Pourbaix-Diagramm entspricht, und nahe bei typischen DWR-
Bedingungen liegt. Ein etwas weniger deutliches Maximum der Rissinitiierungsanfälligkeit
wurde in neueren Untersuchungen an Alloy 600 beobachtet. Einige wenige Versuche mit
Alloy 182 kamen jedoch nicht zu eindeutigen Ergebnissen. Da die meisten SWR (inklusive
der zwei Schweizer Reaktoren) Wasserstoff einspeisen (Wasserstoffchemiefahrweise, HWC,
in Kombination mit oder ohne Edelmetalleinspeisung, NobleChemTM), um der relativ hohen
SpRK-Anfälligkeit der austenitisch rostfreien Stähle und Nickelbasislegierungen unter
oxidierender Normalwasserchemiefahrweise entgegenzuwirken, sollte man dieses Maximum
in der SpRK-Anfälligkeit nicht ignorieren. Es gibt keinen offensichtlichen Grund, weshalb
der gleiche Einfluss von Wasserstoff wie unter DWR-Bedingungen nicht auch unter SWR-
Bedingungen auftreten könnte.
Das Hauptziel dieser Doktorarbeit ist es den weitgehend unerforschten Einfluss des
Wasserstoffgehaltes auf die SpRK-Initiierung und das Kurzrisswachstum in Alloy 182
Schweissgut unter SWR/HWC-Bedingungen bei 274 °C zu untersuchen. Die Ergebnisse
können einen wichtigen Beitrag leisten um optimale Wasserstoffgehalte zur Vorbeugung
gegenüber SpRK zu finden. Um diese Ziele zu erreichen wurden beschleunigte
Rissinitiierungs- und -wachstumsexperimente mit scharf gekerbten Kompaktzugproben
inklusive entsprechender Detektionsmethoden durchgeführt. Diese Untersuchungen zeigten
ein Maximum der SpRK-Initiierungsanfälligkeit und Risswachtumsraten im Bereich der

Ni/NiO-Phasentransformation. Ferner wurde der Einfluss des Wasserstoffgehalts und der
Oberflächengüte auf die SpRK-Initiierung im Alloy 182 Schweissgut durch konstante
Dehnrate-Versuche mit trapezförmigen taillierten Flachzugproben evaluiert. Nach den
Experimenten wurde die Rissverteilung, -längen und -tiefen sehr detailliert ausgewertet und
Spannungsgrenzwerte für das Auftreten von SpRK ermittelt. Interkristalline SpRK-Risse
konnten in allen Proben aus Versuchen bei Wasserstoffgehalten von 10 bis 2000 ppb
gefunden werden. Die höchsten Rissdichten und Risstiefen sowie niedrigsten
Spannungsgrenzwerte wurden im Bereich der Ni/NiO-Phasentransformation bei 253 ppb
Wasserstoffgehalt gefunden, was die Ergebnisse der Untersuchungen mit den
Kompaktzugproben bestätigt. Zusätzlich konnte auch eine höhere SpRK-
Initiierungsanfälligkeit der raueren Probenoberflächen im Vergleich zu den polierten
Oberflächen festgestellt werden.
Eine repräsentative Auswahl an interkristallinen SpRK-Rissen und Initiierungspunkten
wurden mit Hilfe von Elektronenrückstreubeugung (Electron Backscatter Diffraction, EBSD)
analysiert. Kleinwinkelkorngrenzen erwiesen sich als beständig gegenüber SpRK, während
Grosswinkel- und Hochenergiekorngrenzen sich als bevorzugte Initiierungsstellen
herausstellten. Die Auswertung des Schmid-Faktors ergab, dass die Korngrenzenverformung
hierbei eine wichtige Rolle spielt.
Auch die Oxidschichten, die sich im simulierten SWR-Heisswasser mit unterschiedlichen
Wasserstoffgehalten auf den Alloy 182-Oberflächen gebildet haben wurden mittels
Elektronenmikroskopie, sowie elektrochemischen und spektroskopischen Methoden
untersucht. Die von Morton et al. vorgeschlagene Ni/NiO-Phasenumwandlungsgrenze
erschien die passendste. Die Defektdichte sowie der Photostrom zeigten ein Maximum im
Bereich der Ni/NiO-Phasenumwandlungsgrenze. Abschließend wurden verschiedene
mechanistische SpRK-Modelle anhand der erzielten Ergebnisse diskutiert, wobei kein Modell
alleine alle beobachteten Phänomene erklären kann. Der „Slip-Dissolution Mechanism“ ist
jedoch in der Lage zumindest einige dieser Phänomene zu erklären.

Abstract

The Ni-based Alloy 182 is widely used in light water reactors as weld filler metal to join the
low-alloy steel reactor pressure vessel to both wrought Ni-based alloy (e.g., Alloy 600) and
austenitic stainless steel (e.g., AISI 304L, 316L, 316NG) reactor internals and pipings.
During the last decade(s) several stress corrosion cracking (SCC) incidents occurred in Alloy
182 dissimilar metal welds in boiling (BWRs) and pressurised water reactors (PWRs), which
challenged the integrity of the primary coolant circuit in some cases.
SCC crack growth and possibly initiation are strongly affected by the dissolved hydrogen
(DH) content in PWR environment in Ni-base alloys. A temperature-dependent peak in SCC
growth rate has been observed at a certain critical DH concentration, which corresponds to
the thermodynamic Ni/NiO phase transition boundary in the corresponding Pourbaix diagram
and is close to typical primary-side PWR operating conditions. A weak maximum in
initiation susceptibility was observed in recent experiments with wrought Alloy 600 in PWR
environment, whereas the very limited amount of tests with Alloy 182 weld metal do not
allow a clear conclusion so far. As most BWRs (including the two Swiss reactors) are
injecting hydrogen into the feed water (hydrogen water chemistry, HWC, or HWC combined
with NobleChemTM) to mitigate SCC in austenitic stainless steels and Ni-base alloys, this
maximum in initiation susceptibility represents a certain concern. There is no evident reason,
why the same effects of DH that have been reported in PWR primary water should not also
apply to pure BWR water.
The main scientific goal of this PhD thesis is to evaluate the unexplored effect of DH
contents on the SCC initiation and short crack growth behaviour in Alloy 182 weld metal
under BWR/HWC conditions at 274 °C. The results will help to identify optimal DH levels
for SCC mitigation in BWRs. For this purpose, accelerated crack initiation and growth tests
with sharply notched fracture mechanics specimens and in-situ crack initiation and growth
monitoring were conducted. A maximum in initiation susceptibility and crack growth rates
was observed at the Ni/NiO phase transition line. Furthermore, the influence of dissolved
hydrogen content and surface finish on the SCC initiation behaviour in Alloy 182 weld metal
was studied with flat tapered tensile specimens in simulated BWR water using constant
extension rate tensile (CERT) tests. The surface crack distribution, crack depth and stress
threshold for SCC initiation were analysed by detailed post-test quantitative characterization.

Intergranular SCC initiation has been found in all specimens tested with DH contents varying
from 10 to 2000 ppb. The highest crack density and depth and lowest stress threshold for
crack initiation were found to be at the Ni/NiO phase transition line with 253 ppb DH content,
confirming the findings of the tests with compact tension specimens. In addition, ground
surfaces showed a tendency to higher SCC initiation susceptibility compared to electro-
polished surfaces.
Grain boundary misorientations and mismatch in Schmid factor were measured by electron
backscattered diffraction along intergranular stress corrosion cracks and at crack initiation
sites. Only low-angle boundaries were resistant to cracking. Random high-energy high-angle
boundaries with high Schmid factor mismatch were particularly prone to SCC, indicating that
grain boundary deformation plays a key role in SCC.
The oxide films formed in simulated BWR environments with different DH contents were
characterized using electron microscopy, electrochemical and spectroscopic analysis methods.
The Ni/NiO phase transition line proposed by Morton et al. could be confirmed. A maximum
in the defect concentration of the oxide films and highest photocurrent response were found
at the Ni/NiO phase transition line, which corresponds to the maximum in the SCC
susceptibility in Ni-based alloys. The different proposed SCC mechanisms were discussed
and it was concluded that none of the existing mechanisms is able to explain all of the
observed experimental results. The slip-dissolution model seems to be the most promising
model that can reasonably rationalize most of the observed experimental phenomena.
