The ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute (formerly Institute of Southeast Asian
Studies) is an autonomous organization established in 1968. It is a regional
centre dedicated to the study of socio-political, security, and economic
trends and developments in Southeast Asia and its wider geostrategic and
economic environment. The Institute’s research programmes are grouped
under Regional Economic Studies (RES), Regional Strategic and Political
Studies (RSPS), and Regional Social and Cultural Studies (RSCS). The
Institute is also home to the ASEAN Studies Centre (ASC), the Nalanda-
Sriwijaya Centre (NSC) and the Singapore APEC Study Centre.
ISEAS Publishing, an established academic press, has issued more
than 2,000 books and journals. It is the largest scholarly publisher of
research about Southeast Asia from within the region. ISEAS Publishing

This volume had its origins in the workshop on “Education, Globalization
and the Nation State in Southeast Asia” held on 16–17 October 2014. We
would like to thank the participants who contributed to the workshop and
for devoting their time and energy to prepare the papers for the workshop.
The two-day workshop went smoothly with constructive exchanges and
discussions all round.
We have selected seven papers from the workshop to be revised for
publication in this edited volume. Due to unexpected circumstances, I had
to defer for a period of time the process to revise and prepare the papers
for publication. I would like to offer my apologies to the authors included
in this belated publication.
We would to thank Mr Tan Chin Tiong, Director of the ISEAS –
Yusof Ishak Institute, for his support for the workshop and the Konrad-
Adenauer-Stiftung for their generous financial support for both the
