SYLVtRE MONOD is Professor of English at the University of
Paris. He is the author of Dickens Romancier (l 95 3; trans-
lated as Dickens the Novelist, 1968), Charles Dickens (1959),
a
Histoire de la litterature anglaise de Victoria Elisabeth II
(1970), and Histoire du roman anglais (forthcoming), and the
editor and translator of six novels and two volumes of tales
in the Pleiade edition of Dickens, of which he is now General
Editor; he has translated other novels, including Wuthering
Heights and Jane Eyre, and is also General Editor of the
Pleiade Conrad. With George H. Ford he has edited two
Dickens novels for the Norton Critical series: Hard Times
(1966) and Bleak House (1977).
PETER SHILLINGSBURG is Associate Professor of English at
Mississippi State University. He is the author of articles on
editing and on Victorian literature and General Editor of a
new edition of the Works of Thackeray which is currently
in preparation and in which his own edition of Pendennis will
appear. He edited the special Thackeray volume of C osterus
(1974) and served in 1976-77 as Coordinator of the Modern
Language Association's Center for Scholarly Editions.
MICHAEL MILLGA TE is Professor of English at the University
of Toronto. He is the author of William Faulkner (1961),
American Social Fiction (1964 ), The Achievement of William
