Preface
The eco-friendly natural products have been used since ancient times. These originate from
various natural sources such as plants, marine organisms, bacteria, fungi, actinomycetes,
etc. At the beginning of 19th century, about 80% medicines came from plants. After the
discovery of penicillin in 1928, the microorganisms attracted scientists to the discovery
of new molecules to fight various microbial diseases and today, these microbes including
bacteria, fungi and actinomycetes have become a major source of bioactive compounds. In
late 1980s, combinatorial chemistry facilitated the discovery of bioactive compounds and
lead molecules.
After the emergence of COVID-19 pandemic, researchers are looking towards a proper
remedy to overcome the corona crisis. The bio-based products have great potential to fight
with emerging microbial diseases including disease caused by coronaviruses. In the present
scenario, there is a greater need to search for novel antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and
antiparasitic compounds from natural resources.
The proposed book is focused on the use of eco-friendly bio-based products of natural
origin such as plants-derived products from the Amazon, the top hot spot of plants and
other microbial flora, natural products as microbicidal agents against viruses, fungi,
bacteria and microbial parasites. This also includes techniques for the identification
of natural compounds present in extracts and essential oil, the role of terpenes and the
bioactive antimicrobial agents of microbial origin. The authors participating in the book
represent the major plant-rich areas/hotspots including Brazil, India, Argentina, Sri Lanka
and Saudi Arabia, etc.
The book has been divided in three sections: Section I incorporates the bio-based
natural products used in microbial diseases and role of omics in designing antimicrobial
agents. Section II discusses the role of bio-based metabolites to overcome microbial diseases,
and Section III deals with the antimicrobial metabolites of microbial and mushroom origin.
We are thankful to all the contributors for their sincere efforts to provide state-of-
the-art information on the subject matter of their respective chapters. We also express
our sincere thanks to the publisher and the authors of the chapters, whose research
studies have been cited in the present book. Finally, we would like to thank the entire

Introduction
Plants are sessile beings. This way, they cannot escape from unfavorable situations. To
combat or adapt to environmental oscillations, whether of biotic or abiotic kind, they have
developed, through their evolution, the ability to synthesize a plethora of molecules. These
important biological factors are primarily used to maintain/regulate the plant homeostasis.
Man has had close relationship with plants from immemorial times. This led to the
discovery of many important medicinal applications. The following statements are some
outstanding pharmacological insights:
• ‘Let food be your medicine, and medicine be your food’ (Hippocrates; Greek physician;
father of the medicine);
• ‘There are no incurable diseases—only the lack of will. There are no worthless herbs—only the
lack of knowledge’ (Avicenna; Persian polymath; wrote treatises on a variety of subjects,
including medicine).
From the quotes of Avicenna and Hippocrates, two famous scientists in ancient times,
it is evident that the therapeutic power of plants refers to the ancestry of modern humans.
About 60% of the plants have medicinal use in post-Neolithic human history (Hao 2019).
Fossils also revealed people from Mesopotamia (now Iraq; about 60.000 years ago) used a
medicinal plant named Hollyhock (Alcea rosea) (Cowan 1999), this was, perhaps, the first
recorded strategy used by man against illnesses. Plants are the largest biochemical and
pharmaceutical ‘stores’ on Earth, and these ‘living stores’ help in understanding a myriad of
biochemical compounds. The medicinal importance of plants has economic consequences.
